Hah, I re-watched that last year. Also, at the risk of sounding material, I figured I'd be waking up to the smell of the napalm in the morning real soon with how the world's going and all, so decided I might as well look the part (not the original unfortunately, but a 2020 re-issue). Was my "pandemic purchase" alongside nihilistic face masks.

On topic; not sure if anime counts on this thread, but I just finished Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! (roughly translated to "Keep your hands off the video research club!"). I don't watch much anime these days (because most of them are overly insular otaku-pandering crap), but this was a joy to watch. Atypical, wacky, occasionally satirical bordering on meta, and wonderfully animated. I will confess that I'm a bit of a fan of the studio that made it (some of the director's older works like Kemonozume and Kaiba are stuff of legend), but this is the kind of series I'd recommend anyone, even to people who usually dislike anime.

Hmm, insights from a fundamentalist Christian who claims to have been (amongst other things) a Satanist, a Freemason, a member of the Illuminati, and a vampire?

Lol:)  Did a bid to replace some steps among other things on a lodge building.  Nice people all around, and do good work in the area, but yeah, gotta have a belief in God to join.

Funny enough, I had heard that as a mason, I was automatically a member, but no.  I told them I knew all sorts of groovy weird math stuff about the pyramids and the like but they just stared at me:)

My wife, who works hand in hand with me was told she couldn't be a member either, as no girls allowed.

So two strikes . . or is that three? Ha!
The vampire people ...  well. Rather disturbing in a sad sort of way.

Well it's not like they are a club of batmen. smile

There was not enough time to see all of it but many of his views are nonsence.
I'm not interested in adopting his views, just keeping an open mind
and trying to see how cults work through my own perspective.
To see things outside of the box.
He walked on all sides, and his perspective is interesting to me.
He moves from one box to another, so to say, and compares the boxes he has visited.
And his views evolve as he goes from one box to the next.
Kind of like a computer program.
But despite gaining experiance he is still unable to see the same pattern in all of the boxes.

All the cults are similar in some ways, they build temples and brainwash followers to follow their paths.

Those horrible oaths are every member has to make have a purpose.
It's purpose is fear. Fear is a powerful tool of submission.
Even Roman Catholic Church incorporated heaven and hell into their belief system.
The idea was likely borrowed from some other religions or cults like all the religions did.
It scares the followers to not end up "burning in the ethernal flames of hell".
Submission through fear. Reward and punishment.

I prefer to just hide in the mountains.  When that doesn't work I'll just bend over and take it.  I would fight back but I'm not an armed country, just have enough to stop an intruder or kill a deer or something if need be, us being hungry.

Re: What are you watching right now?

PBS - A Thousand Cuts
So this is what's been going on in the Philippines while the world gaped at the antics of The Orange Baby.
It's just like Trump, only worse: he got re-elected. Put his children in leading positions. Is openly killing people, openly defying the democratic constitution. You have to listen to some of his original sound bites, it's chilling.
A stark warning to the USA and the rest of the world: you got away this time, but the next clown is already looming.
The role of social media & its amplifying algorithms cannot be underestimated.

Maria Ressa:
Just earlier this month I spent time with the Cambridge Analytica whistleblower, Christopher Wylie. [He] said they tested the tactics of how to manipulate you [the USA & "western" world] in our countries and in other countries in the global south, and the reason why he said that was because we don’t have strong governments. They can get away with impunity, and then if it worked in our countries, then they would—his word was "port" it over to you. So the first step is, I think we have to realize that something horrific has already happened and that we are at this existential moment where if nothing significant is done—journalism is only the first part. Journalism and democracy as we know it is dead.

We’re your dystopian future.

I heard similar things from Italy (I think they even wanted to move the electorial process to some sort of social media platform) and then there's Poland, Hungary, Belarus...

This is why there are paid contractors for the social media management.
Companies use them quite often to silence the critiques.
They have from 100's to millions of accounts.
Posting in waves they create a feeling of desired popular opinion and minimize the posts that critisize the subject.
Actors, sport figures, politicians, political parties, intelligence, heck, even the governments use them.
In China it's 10 cent army, in USA some private contractors.
Journalism is dead.
6 mega corporations own all of the media.
Who owns those corporations owns the entire media.

Re: What are you watching right now?

^ Paid contractors - I specifically mentioned Cambridge Analytica in my last post.
It goes way beyond "troll factory", there's a whole science behind this.
And CA are not dead, you know. Back then, media attention shifted to Facebook and forgot about the real culprit.

You should really watch the docu.
Somebody on LQ shared a direct download link, you can use youtube-dl:

youtube-dl -F "https://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/videos/frontline/c7fea6eb-28f1-4ebe-b40d-f2e1c862d3ce/2000213452/hd-16x9-mezzanine-1080p/00004001-hls-16x9-1080p.m3u8"

This gives you a few formats to choose from, if you don't want the largest, then use the numerical value in the first column:

youtube-dl -f <your_choice> "https://ga.video.cdn.pbs.org/videos/frontline/c7fea6eb-28f1-4ebe-b40d-f2e1c862d3ce/2000213452/hd-16x9-mezzanine-1080p/00004001-hls-16x9-1080p.m3u8"

It's that antisemitic Trumpist. She was on the news yesterday, getting fired I think?

Interestingly, new Covid case numbers are currently highest in Arizona... oh, Darwin's law, save us! (My apologies to all sane Arizonians)

Re: What are you watching right now?

Gotta have to thank Netflix for introducing me to the world of suspenseful and over-the-top South Korean TV shows and movies. Some real gems out there, better than most of what hollywood puts out these days. Have a faible for nordic noir, French crime and South Korean crime/justice shows now smile SK stuff is quite acceptable as long as they keep the supernatural aspect out of it.

Currently watching: Partners for Justice (검법남녀) ludicrous style yet entertaining, unfortunately only 32hours long as the 3rd season will probably never be.

In good memory: The Good Detective (모범형사, good TV series), Stranger (비밀의 숲 TV series; best Korean stuff so far yet); Inside Men (부자들, one of my favourites actually)

Still can't get a hang of Korean though. Japanese is so much easier to understand by ear.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Myanmar, or Burma as it used to be known, has of course become a hot topic.
I've never visited Burma but I was on the Thai side of the border in 1989, and visited a Karen refugee camp where I met a lady in the KNU named Mary On. We spoke for an hour or so and I learned a little of what kind of things had been happening (pretty bad).

Ethnic conflict in Burma has deep roots, with a good share of the blame to the former colonialists:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_conflict
As usual, nothing is as simple as it might appear, but plenty of atrocities have been comitted.

Anyway, inspired to do some web searching I discovered that the refugee camp I visited was probably called Huay Kaloke, near the Thai town of Mae Sot, and was burned down by Burmese troops in 1990.

And a film has been made about Mary On! Here's a 10min excerpt:

Humans could never be allowed to rule in a democracy.
In the documentary called “The Century Of The Self”,
you explore how today’s society came up to be
and how the very human nature was shaped during this process.
Don’t watch if you don’t want to take the red pill.

80s Celtics basketball. The film is not sped up, that's just how fast they played. Worth watching for the Hall & Oates basketball video montage alone...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhZ3iDch9GI

Also, Larry Bird. The greatest basketball player, along with Magic Johnson, of all time. Also the best mullet of all time. And some very biased officiating, which hasn't changed in any major sport at present. Nd even minor sports like figure skating.

And how many buckets and defensive plays and setups does Dennis Johnson make, the shortest man on the court?

Re: What are you watching right now?

So the story on this game is that a week or two before, Bird assisted and supported Kevin McHale in scoring a club-high record of something like 56 points. Bird then played this game aiming to beat that record, and it was such a clinic that the opposing bench was cheering him. I think 3 Hawks players got fined for their joviality. If you don't have time, at least watch the fourth quarter...
