Herbie Hancock ft. Joni Mitchell (live, 2008)

Definitely not Wayne Shorter on sax. Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, he's amazing.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Let's step away from adult contemporary jazz and otherwise flawless uploads that have a disastrous click in them every twenty seconds or so and post "We Have Explosive" by Future Sound of London (1997, official video)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc9l7pygQRo

And if this leads into a video of "My Kingdom", let it play.

Future Sound of London Presents... FSOL, Aphex Twin, Spooky (MTV, 1996)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GpKFVzfulI

What a shame there's so much hiss. Most of these are studio tracks though, you could re-dub the video with better quality audio.

Whatever is happening at around 18 minutes is really great.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Right, so the track is 'Hypoallergenic' by Spooky and here's a good upload...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GpKFVzfulI

Now I just have to learn Openshot which I'm downloading now and replace the original audio. Should be simple, right?

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Ok, so Openshot isn't that hard but it's not an easy first hour. and exporting this 6 minute video with HQ audio on my hardware will take at least a few hours. It's a good music video, though.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Wait, did I do it? The video cuts out a few seconds before the audio, but pretty good for a beginner. 6 minutes and 10 seconds...

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UjPqof … sp=sharing

Yeah, that came out great. That's some real Boards of Canada shit right there, maybe better. I'll have to try another track tomorrow.

Hmm, not this one...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ Thanks for asking. I'm more fortunate than most. Lost power for about 12 hours early on and water pressure was too low to bathe for 4 days. Now waiting to see what my gas bill is, some have been hit with bills of thousands of dollars because of the "free market" system we have in Taxes. Others have it much worse, burning their furniture to keep warm. Food store shelves are mostly empty as people panic buy.

If this is the worst that happens to me I'll have it made.

8bit

edit: the free market system that is a root cause of the problem. There is no profit incentive to prepare for a disaster; especially when the public will pick up the tab for repairs.

Sorry, of what specifically?

Herbie Hancock's cover of 'Don't Give Up' by Peter Gabriel, in studio. John legend, Pink, Vinnie Colaiuta, a really young Tal Wilkenfeld, Herbie, they don't show the guitarist. This is beautiful, I cried through most of it on first listen just now. I know John Legend is super talented, I just am not a fan of what he produces, or what I've heard of that, but he sings the hell out of this song...

Herbie Hancock - Space Captain, in studio, Susan Tedeschi on lead vocals. Herbie and Derek Trucks on slide guitar trading fours near the end is pretty amazing...

Just download the mp4, then ffmpeg can pull an mp3 out of it with one line.
You might want to tweak it for bitrate etc (see man ffmpeg, or web search) but it's basically simple:

ffmpeg -i something.mp4 -vn something.mp3

I exported this from OpenShot at medium quality to save time and reduce file size. I created the mp3 to import into OpenShot with youtube-dl and audacity. A quick tutorial...

Uninstall the Debian youtube-dl package if installed...

sudo apt purge youtube-dl

Install youtube-dl from github...

sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

Grab a YouTube URL, here's that track at an acceptable bitrate...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvHZMLFGSkc

Download it...

youtube-dl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvHZMLFGSkc

Install Audacity, import the file to audacity, Ctrl+a to select all, make sure the sample rate in the lower-left box (Project Rate Hz) is 44100, export to mp3 using the defaults.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^Or, to save a step:

youtube-dl -x https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvHZMLFGSkc

Although the resulting audio file will probably be an m4a or opus, not an mp3.

EDIT that gives "best" quality format, but you can force mp3 with:

youtube-dl -x --audio-format mp3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvHZMLFGSkc

A personal note to Paul Simon, this is how you do world music. Not some "You Can Call Me Al" bullshit with Chevy Chase in it.

Paul Simon responds: I'm worth millions of dollars and I was married to Carrie Fischer and Edie Brickell when they were both hot, and you were homeless and living in the forest a few years ago.

Me: James Taylor and Billie Joel are both better songwriters than you.

Paul: Homeless!
