Flavorful origins season 3.  This series about Chinese ingredients and regions is amazing.

Re: What are you watching right now?

@john there’s lots of good ideas there.  As a person that prefers Korean nori yeah there are lots of different ideas out there.  Also kind of cool history how certain things have been cross pollinated and developed in the region.  Of course some of the stuff is way off in left field.

I’d pay you handsomely for some umeboshi  onigiri about now.  Miss it.  I can make curry though with sweet potatoes that will make S&B cry.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Getting OT here, but yes Korean nori is a nice snack - I think they brush it with sesame oil and sprinkle some salt. You can buy it here in Japan.
My wife makes umeboshi sometimes, but we're still eating the batch from the year before last. Can't you buy them in the US? You'd need Japanese rice too though - try California.
And sweet potato curry sounds excellent - care to share the recipe on the food thread?

‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’  directed by Spike Lee. On HBO.

Quintessential David Byrne. Must see. Rhythms within rhythms.

Same as it ever was.

I am watching the same thing I always watch - NCIS: New Orleans. It may be stupid, but it is fun.

I have done it myself.
I have watched - I get confused by the acronyms - CSI: Las Vegas IIRC. and the cyber offspin. And some NCIS (I guess the original is just called NCIS?). But all got boring after 1 or 2 seasons...

Does New Orleans as a setting play a role in the show? That could be nice...

I know it's been many months since you posted this, but I only just realized it was in my Netflix watchlist backlog. Searched the forum and your post came up.

Worth the time? Seems like it got killed after one season, so I'm wondering if we get a conclusion of sorts or are we left hanging? Trying to decide between this and Queen's Gambit.

Re: What are you watching right now?

^ Easy call. Both.

Giri / Haji was most thought provoking, and really held my attention. Like you said, it's been a while, but I don't remember being left hanging. I haven't recommended many things here, so, for what that's worth.

Loved Queen's Gambit. Hard not to fall love with that face, those eyes... Upbeat, wholesome, addicting.

Re: What are you watching right now?

@8bit
Thanks for the insight. I'll flip a coin tomorrow to see which to watch first. Outside sport and news, I'm bad at this TV thing. Think I've seen more TV in 2020 than the last 15 years combined.

I found it watchable if a little placative; something 2-dimensional about the constant comparison of British and Japanese culture. But, good enough for me to watch the whole season. Nice crime TV in any case, and a welcome change to all the US American stuff out there.
I think I'd have remembered if there was an annoyingly huge cliffhanger. Maybe a small one, keeping options open for season 2 sort of.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Warning: can cause severe reactions if you're allergic to Martin "The Hobbit" Freeman.
I'm not; but I hear that some really hate his acting. Having seen him in a few productions, his facial ticks do get old.

And how do you call Californication when it happens in Miami and not L.A.?

Three episodes into season 1, I like Startup enough to write about it. It brings together people from all walks of life, and also different genres of TV entertainment: Crime & drugs, cops (corrupt), young entrepreneurs. I think there's a good deal of tongue-in-cheek although it's not a comedy. There's a lot of sex (as in the act of doing it) in the first episode, for some reason. And, as expected, a lot of sunshine & Miami beach & Caribbean vibes... and oh, I forgot, it's also about hacking, as in writing code, creating a digital currency.

I have no illusions about it being realistic.

The cinematographic style isn't revolutionary, but visually appealing, and there's a very nice shaky camera running chase at the beginning of E03.

Re: What are you watching right now?

I love Tombstone, I'm in the minority in that I loathe Oh Brother. Hate hate hate it.

@ohnonot, my beef with Freeman is he's a one trick pony. He's a subdued William Shatner with shades of Hugh Grant. He does the same quiet Shatner/Hugh Grant shtick in every role he plays.

Re: What are you watching right now?

I retract my rant about Startup. Not sure what to think of this show anymore.
One thing is for sure, the plot keeps me interested what happens next.
OTOH I don't like plots that revolve about a million dollars (or 2, or 10).
But, isn't this the same concept as Breaking Bad? I only ever watched a couple of episodes of that show (yeah I know).
