Re: What are you listening to right now?

Keith Jarrett. Nearly as eccentric as Glenn Gould, and nearly as brilliant. Solo piano, 1976...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTwCzeoZdXA

More brilliant. Brillianter. Keith writes his own music. Gould plays Bach and Brahms and some other hacks.

Err, I take it back. Brahms and Gould are good hacks...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpg--sqvptI

^ That might be the best piano recording I've ever heard. Gould makes classical pieces into jewels.

My favorite, though, is Vince Guaraldi (this is Cast Your Fate to the Wind, 1962.) The man could really swing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Krl9nnXT4

Skating, Vince Guaraldi Trio (unused cut from 1969 or about there)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mNwEqTlRoM

Skating, Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, 1965...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kn4Y3sHyfsg

The most melancholy Christmas Time Is Here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvI_FNrczzQ

I want to take this song home and wrap it in a warm blanket, the poor thing.

Piano FTW.

The man was a musical genius, and a drunk. I love him. Vince Guaraldi, Greensleeves (1965) The rhythm and timing on this track, superb...

I see your Keith Jarrett and raise you a McCoy Tyner.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvn6oTcBuSk

For those who don't know, McCoy was John Coltrane's pianist - had a great career carrying forward his legacy.  This is from a fiery and furious 1975 album, Atlantis.

Also this from the same album.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ Some of the most sophisticated jazz I've ever heard, and very hard to listen to as a result.

Something a little lighter (well, not 'Goodbye', that tune is heavy like a mountain). I hear your Tyner and raise with Oscar Peterson and his trio, 1965. For those who don't know, according to Wikipedia he was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, simply "O.P." by his friends, and informally in the jazz community as "the King of inside swing". One of the most influential pianists of all time...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M95UzNPfjhE

He's definitely singing while he's playing, same as Gould and Jarrett. Must be a result of putting left/right brain/hands together in perfect synchronicity.

Greatest hits, if you need another hour-plus of classic jazz... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_73txwJSvSA

I can't wait till we get to T. Monk, H. Hancock, B. Worrell, R. Sakamoto, Liberace Elton John, George Duke, Billy Preston, Brad Mehldau, Donald Fagen, etc...

Brad Mehldau solo piano (2019)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSvdj-Xn59c

I don't have a date for this, but he looks very young. I'll guess mid-'90s...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IytAftpt6zw

Brad does not sing. He's just one of the best pianists to ever play the instrument.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Thelonious Monk, a complete mental case, literally. The man had issues. Musically, both incredibly heavy handed and amazingly deft and light...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KshrtLXBdl8

And we have another singer. Er, grunter, croaker, whatever.

Liberace Elton John...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqILBHSU80g

Christopher O'Riley covers Radiohead, solo piano...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3Mk8fo … CpFpbDyzPI

Karma Police, Let Down, Airbag and Subterranean Homesick Alien are exceptional. The whole album, in fact.

Yeah, it's not for everyone.

This is one of my fave Peterson tracks...   The Wave, a bossa nova written by Antonio Carlos Jobim.   Much lighter - always lifts the mood.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Been listening to Bagel Radio again, there's a particular good stretch happening right now.

Then this one popped up:

The Beths - "I'm Not Getting Excited" (official music video)
F*cking great piece of noise pop.
There's something incredibly, effortlessly skilful about her voice counteracting with the lead guitar.

The video, btw, is a nod to their musical heritage of NZ indie pop of the 80s, e.g. Tall Dwarfs | Nothings Going To Happen...

And another instant classic on Bagel Radio: "Psychonaut" Music Video by mr. Gnome

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Matthew Halsall - Salute to the Sun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7PEJ1lFogs

Let's switch it up. Acoustic guitar in rock music. First up, Pigs On The Wing (pt. 1)/Dogs. From Animals, Roger Waters/David Gilmour, Pink Floyd, 1976...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNFitxST5lY

Also, Dogs is my favorite Pink Floyd track. And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around. Just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer oh oooooh! Like the club tie, and the firm handshake. A certain look in the eye and an easy smile. How old was was Waters in '76 when he wrote those lyrics? 33 years old? Amazing.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Spam post, this has nothing to do with acoustic piano or guitar and everything to do with David Gilmour and Walter Becker using the Talkbox better than Peter Frampton ever did.

Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones), starting at 3:14 or so, kicks in at about 5:13...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOqblSqx_VI

Steely Dan - Haitian Divorce, the whole lead guitar track...

Great!

Nice live Mingus version of C Jam Blues at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv4MSKN891Q

About 6 minutes in the "out there" sax player George Adams does his thing, at 9:36 he's followed by the great Rahsaan Roland Kirk who imitates Adam's style effortlessly, "cuttin' him at his own shit" as Mingus says in the album liner notes

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ And mine is Overnite Sensation (1973). George Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ruth and Ian Underwood, Ralph Humphrey, Tom Fowler, and some of Zappa's best guitar work. Apostrophe was from the same recording sessions, but I don't like it as much. I love Fifty-Fifty, my pick for best track out of the sessions, what a screaming jazz tune. Duke and Ponty Freaking wail and then Zappa crushes them with distortion and just cramming in as many notes as he can. Zomby Woof is one of the more sophisticated jazz tunes ever, very early Chicago (the band), and Zappa's longest and best solo on the album. Skip Dirty Love (don't skip Dirty Love, the guitar solo is insane) and Dynamo Hum if you want safe for work. Camarillo Brillo kicks it off, at least listen through I Am The Slime, the second track. Zappa plays guitar on the outro, and it's amazing...
