Re: What are you listening to right now?

Well, I can think of one track, at least, that redeems Eric Clapton. Going Down Slow. Here's a great live version...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvUwi5TRGSI

But it's nothing compared to the album track, which is a blues masterpiece with some of the most controlled wah pedal I've ever heard. And weird how the lead guitar is barely audible after the intro (the head) until the solo and then disappears again until it's just Eric singing in a bathtub or something, but we'll come back to that...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBUHDs8eN7w

-edit- Not the usual Rip Stop from Retail Therapy Clapton follow up, but similar, just more ambient. Donna (from T.D.F. - Retail Therapy, 1997)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlZAP6vpimY

Again from Retail Therapy, more adult contemporary. Pnom Sen. This one's really good as well...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy9IpGCRrCI

Angelica...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnuXM7n … 2I&index=2

Blue Rock (I quite like this one. The electric guitar is subtly tearing it up, but it's so in the distance of the mix that it's doubly subtle. While several other less distorted guitar parts get featured more prominently, though maybe more subtly now that I've mentioned the lead guitar part, which you now cannot unhear. And it starts with what sounds like cicadas, which are annoying as hell, so well done)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwZGwz2 … 2I&index=3

And that, IMO, is a definite shout-out to what Santana was producing at the time.

And, yes, Rip Stop and it's average drum and bass, awesome solo electric guitar and really good retro video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49NpZ7t … 2I&index=4

@John, you can say that your not a fan of Clapton and I'll understand. Just don't say that the man can't craft great arrangements and execute some exceptional guitar parts. There's a reason he's been so popular for so long. Not a fan of his vocals? That's a valid criticism.

It's like me saying I don't like Elton John. I hate Elton John. Shitty lyrics which he didn't even write, generally bad singing and worse guitar parts. Did he even have guitar parts? Rocket Man, I guess.  But the man is, by any measure, one of the most successful popular musicians of all time. A number 1 billboard hit for something like 20 years. I don't know, I didn't Google it, but I know it's a massive stat. My opinion does nothing to change that. And I still like Benny and the Jets, and the song with Kiki Dee. Don't Go Breaking My Heart.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Heart! Break! Don't!

Sorry, I snoozed off. Bad dream. And Whatever Gets You Thru The Night with John Lennon. And Elton's cover of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, that one's a great cover...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

And to end my spam, Busta Rhymes and Dr. Dre finally released their new album. It only took them ten years. Worth the wait.

Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God (obvious;y nsfw, explicit and most likely offensive lyrics)

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=O … eRKkrZW4dU

Some gorgeous music mixed in with all that harshness. Eh, dobbie?

And full of ol' skool. In love with the Bell Biv Devoe remix, and that's track 3? 4?

But the standout track is YUUUUU. Not safe for work or life, blah blah...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9wNNpNrXPA

-edit- The "skull in a tux" album art isn't taken entirely from Tim Burton's Jack Skeleton (which is also derivative, I saw what I thought was the original inspiration/piece at the old Tate in London in 2001 but can't remember the artist or title). It's also taken from The Residents. Only their skull is an eyeball...

Two Steps From Hell - Winterspell

Lara6683 did a piano cover recently.

TSFH is literally endless good music. Their FLAC albums are so hard to get.

PS. Some of my favourites:

- Flight of the Silverbird - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-Dh3ftkRAs
- Cannon in D - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKmw9oS__MM
- Never back down - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZTkg8GGEOo

I like their motto: Music makes you braver

Nice music though.

No idea. I didn't bother viewing it. Already have the album. Not on Bandcamp and label site doesn't stream previews (afaict), so I just linked Youtube. In hindsight, maybe I should've linked the Discogs page instead. Will note to self.

No, sorry, I have enough bandwidth and this is not specific to the music you posted which I'm glad you did.

It bothers me on a general level:

  • upload music as a "video" with a static background image: Good. Almost all bandwidth is for the audio

  • upload music as a "video" with a constantly flickering & ever so slightly changing background image: Bad. A lot of bandwidth is wasted on visual noise, and nobody looks at it while listening.

I have seen this a few times now on YT. Maybe it makes for better "SEO", IDK.
One could animate the first few seconds of the music "video", then just leave it static. That would be acceptable.

It's like humanity wants to find ever new ways to bring down the internet... and most people have no clue about the vast differences in file size between text and media. Every smartphone pic contains The Whole Bible at least twice.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

This just smacks of old men drooling over a pretty young woman who knows how to play their favorites...
Yuck.

Me, I'm watching the 3rd season of Westworld and noticed a peculiar connection to my musical world...

I always like a heroine breaking free of her male oppressors, taking full, violent and precise revenge on them.
It gives me pleasure.

This is a strong theme throughout Westworld (the new series; can't speak to the old movie or the books).
Conrasting with an opulent era backdrop.
Another strong theme is, of course, the puppets revolting against their masters. I like the hi-tech hi-fidelity incarnation of Westworld, but this is a much older theme.

I found hints of all this in Siouxsie & the Banshees Juju album, particularly these two songs:

Arabian Knights (against the male opressor)

I heard a rumour
It was just a rumour
I heard a rumour
What have you done to her?

A tourist oasis
Reflects in seedy sunshades
A monstrous oil tanker
Its wound bleeding in seas

Veiled behind screens
Kept as your baby machine
Whilst you conquer more orifices
Of boys, goats and things
Ripped out sheep's eyes
No forks or knives

Myriad lights
They said I'd be impressed
Arabian Knights
At your primitive best

and

Monitor (puppets break free, resenting violence for entertainment)

Monitor outside
For the people inside
A prevention of crime
A passing of time

They come and they go
It's a passing of time
They come and they go
Whilst we sit in our homes

Sit back and enjoy
The real McCoy
Our new air of authority
Our sentinel of misery

His face was full of intent
And we shook with excitement
Then the victim stared up
Looked strangely at the screen
As if her pain was our fault
But that's entertainment
What we crave for inside
No more second rate movies
From those people outside

Those two songs describe the story & athmosphere of Westworld so well, I'm almost sure Siouxsie must've been inspired by it (the first movie or the books).

Musically, her angry ecstasy reflects in the band's intensity - both songs take a step up around the middle, which always gives me shivers. Yes, Siouxsie, shout it out! Show them your contempt! We're with you!

Last but not least, John McGeoch's guitar playing is outstanding, extraordinary, melodic and noisy...
