It was a warm, summer day at the base of the mountain and snowing like mad at the summit the day I went. Made the hot chocolate at the cafe all the taster. Nice twisty ride on the motorcycle.

Well that was random, and old. As impressive as that time by Loeb was, Pikes Peak Hill Climb regulations baffle me. It’s basically open season, so the one with the most money/tech wins, except it’s not big enough for manufacturers to contemplate an arms race with each other, so you’ll have one manufacturer take their “turn” each year to build some shit hot prototype. You could’ve put a less handy driver in that Peugeot and they’d have still won easily that year. And that’s only for the cages. Bikes seem to be capped, probably for safety reasons. Wierd event, but then again it’s Colorado…

^All true I guess, however I have never seen such an impressive cut (spectators cameras and comments cut in), I guess imho that's how races should really be broadcast (well not this days).

Except that the bravery and coordination needed to drive at or near the limit on that mountain, at those speeds, requires a special driver. You can see from some of the aerial sequences that even Loeb wasn't always taking the fastest, but riskiest, racing line.

^ Oh, I have no doubt whatsoever they'd be slower than Loeb - that he held the course record for 5 years speaks for itself - but they'd still have won it that year, easily. That Peugeot was batshit trick. Btw, if you're looking for bravery and machine control, try searching for recordings of races from when the course was mostly dirt. Ari Vatanen's run would be a good place to start (though obviously the video coverage will be nowhere near as impressive), but some of Nobuhiro Tajima's driving in that legendary Suzuki is equally impressive.

More of a prmotional short film, but the driving is 100% real

That Vatanen isn't FIA President is one of the biggest tragedies in motorsport.

Wait, you guys are driving on pavement?
From my experience few of them problematic individuals do, also seems to be mysteriously connected to certain brands of cars.
edit: You mean sidewalk?

Yeah that was RWD, much stronger engined group b with AWD is basically unplayable with keyboard.

No, I meant road instead of gravel, dirt and snow. I love rally racing.
As a matter of fact, what's up with that Pike's Peak run in the OP? I thought that run was mostly dirt? Is there more than 1 track up the mountain?
-edit- Ah, it used to be dirt, then dirt and pavement, then they paved the whole thing in 2011. Saves in funeral costs and salvage operations, I'm sure.

Some of that crazy stuff @glitter mentioned earlier. Automobiles Peugeot présente, Climb Dance (Pikes Peak in the late '80s)...

The new stuff is fast and exciting, the old stuff is slower and bloody terrifying.

^ 2020, your computer adjusted race car with paddle-shifters controls your ascent at tremendous speed up tarmac.
^ 1988, drive one-handed with a manual gear shift on dirt while using your other hand as a visor, sliding and drifting on the cliff-edge the whole way. Your brakes might fail, your steering might fail (3:32 is epic).
Compare 7:20 in the OP, I think that's the same turn. There's a barricade, there's a real road, there was probably a sign indicating the sharp turn, it doesn't look scary at all. In the older video HIS BACK TIRES ARE ALMOST OVER THE CLIFF!

Well come on. @glittersloth is here. Let's break out the bikes...

Isle of Man. Where men ride motorcycles, or something. I don't know, there's a TV ad out now where the guy is fused to a bike like a Minotaur, I'm just really confused.

But unless I have full-on dementia, and I may, @glittersloth has done the Isle of Man Time Trial, more than once I think.
Back to rally, and I've posted this before but it's a great addition to this thread. Kimi teaches May how to rally...

^I wonder how air to engine intake was regulated on this older cars (based on elevation I mean)?

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure there was none and they lost power as they got closer to the top.

Art of rally, another try at group b, not pretty ... (keyboard + manual transmission). This are AWD vehicles, overpowered.

Tarmac track, still a big mystery how to even attempt to drive this (Supposedly Japan, group b, manual trans., keyboard). Also featuring minecraft people.
