Re: Club Lounge - What are you drinking now? (Alcoholic Version)

This evening, I'm enjoying a bottle of Leffe Brune, a Belgium strong beer. Very nice dark beer; a bit too sweet to be perfect though.

This quarantine is turning me into a beer connoisseur.

^^Leffe Blonde is quite nice too, if you haven't tried it. A bit more conventional perhaps.

I never did post the Lambic I bought...

Black currant. The stuff is flipping pricey. It was ok, not great. I wanted Lindemans, I couldn't find it locally during a pandemic.

Re: Club Lounge - What are you drinking now? (Alcoholic Version)

^Don't bother searching for Lindemans fruit beer: it's too sweet in my (somewhat limited) experience. They do appear to make some other worthwhile lambic beers though, according to this nice guide I just found:
The ultimate guide to Belgium's lambic breweries
Has some other snippets like "3 Fonteinen nearly went out of business in 2009 when a faulty thermostat cause nearly their entire stock to explode."

I currently have a bottle of unopened Guinness on my desk ready to go....I'm deciding whether I'm in the mood for a beer or would I rather just have a glass of water?

Also, remember the Guinness slogan... "Guinness gives you strength." It's liquid bread, mate! Cheers.

-edit- Currently drinking slightly skunked Heineken at noon on my day off. Heineken skunks really easily.

^ I'd argue that an ice-cold Busch Light (has to be cooler-of-icewater cold) is better than a slightly skunked Heineken at the same temperature!

Re: Club Lounge - What are you drinking now? (Alcoholic Version)

I'm not proud to say that I've been too lazy to go to ALKO recently (to buy something other than beer) and have been sampling all sorts of "normal supermarket brands". Discovering a brand I've been avoiding so far cause they put ascorbic acid in all their products --- why? But their beers are diverse and tasty. Two different darker ones, and a Weizen right now. Nom!
(they say it's "hand made" - wtf does that even mean in a clearly industrial package sold in huge quantities across the country?)

Guinness! It seems the 440ml can is now available as a 6 pack where as before it was only available as a four pack.  Same price, half again as much liquid black gold.

It's only vitamin C - I think it might inhibit oxydation or something - but as long as the quantities are not enough to affect the taste, surely no problem?

That's what it is for. Like most E codes, it's a preservative. As E300, it is made by fermentating and oxidizing glucose, so I guess it's almost a "natural ingredient".

Of course it doesn't mean anything, It's just a way of speech that you are supposed to use if you are in brewing industry. I doubt there's a brand that is made completely without hands. It's just like "only natural ingredients": there are no supernatural or unnatural substances. (How about sacramental wine?)

Have you noticed that every small brewery product is an "artisan beer" nowadays?

You should've put the quotes around "almost".
Back before EU "simplifed" things, this sort of stuff was called not artificial, but "nature-identical".
Yes, I know what ascorbic acid is.

But - my point is: most brands do very well without it, adhering to the Reinheitsgebot, and make high quality beer.
Why is Keisari putting it in everything?

I doubt there's a brand that is made completely without hands. It's just like "only natural ingredients"

Yeah, that explains it!

Re: Club Lounge - What are you drinking now? (Alcoholic Version)

Dangerous stuff. I have stories of ice fishing and snowmobiling in rural Ontario, Canada, while drinking Crown Royal Whisky and Molson Golden Ale. Dangerous stories. The gas-powered auger sent me tumbling 6 feet when I tried to drill through the four foot thick ice. It was a cold winter, about year 1999.
