Re: What are you listening to right now?

For pianists, I nominate Holly Bowling. I have been enjoying her music for a couple of years, and it seems she is becoming more popular.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ 13 minutes of pure beauty. Great post. I work with a couple of Dead Heads, they'll love this.

Jean-Luc Ponty (electric violin) at the height of his sequential rock-jazz fusion powers, 1979. Sunset Drive, from the album A Taste For Passion, featuring a killer fretless bass solo by Ralphe Armstrong and a great electric guitar solo by Jamie Glaser. Ponty is no slouch on his 5-string electric violin, either...

Crap, I'm back in the '80s again. Phil Collins - Don't Lose My Number (12" extended version, 1985) Some outstanding playing by Daryl Steurmer on guitar and Phil on drums...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Tie in between Genesis and Jean-Luc Ponty. A young Daryl Steurmer (Genesis) on guitar. Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean Pt,III (1977) with more killer jazz bass...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zPZd_8JCFc

And a year earlier, Steurmer on acoustic guitar. Gardens of Babylon from 1976...

-edit- For the first track the solo order is guitar, fiddle. The second track is keyboard, guitar. fiddle.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

My new bluetooth speaker just arrived, a JBL Charge 4 in blue. For a portable speaker, it is large and heavy.

Burning it in with Squarepusher - My Red Hot Car (2001)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqjZUyUtqYs

Full volume on repeat. I stuck the speaker still playing in a closet for now, I've heard the track five times already. Sounding great. Burn, baby, burn.

@hhh, I have a pair of JBL Charge 3 that I have been using in stereo for a couple of years. I enjoy them a lot. I appreciate the fact that they are heavy.

A bluesy Saturday. Recorded a couple of albums onto a blank CD years ago, listening to it now. Contains:

Neighborhoods - Olu Dara (2001)
Who's Been Talkin'? - The Robert Cray Band (1980)

They're definitely stretching the definition of a "portable" bluetooth speaker with the Charge 4. It's 8 inches across, 4 6-7 inches around and must weigh five pounds/2 kilos. On the plus side, it's fairly well waterproofed, you can link multiple speakers together and if you get mugged for your speaker, you have a good chance of getting away by clubbing your mugger over the head with the speaker he's trying to steal. And the bass will be cranking the whole time. 60hz, not bad for a bluetooth speaker. I'm impressed with the sound quality now that the speaker has been burned in some.

10/10, can recommend, it's a solid unit...

https://www.rakuten.com/shop/ceoverstoc … gI93_D_BwE

A week ago it was at $115, so $125 with free delivery and tax included. Grab it before it goes up in price for Christmas.

-edit- I forgot, even linked to a phone via Bluetooth, it plays loud and clear. Really loud, and as clear as your source material allows.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Linking them all together so it's not spam, my heavy rotation playlist...

St. Germain - Mary L.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-8EMlDxdII

Run The Jewels - RTJ4 (full album)

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P … VEyRJdDNgP

Holly Bowling (thanks, Ratcheer) - Terrapin Station Suite

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc1V4aR2UbM

She keeps the interpretation simple. I like that, she's not trying to impress anybody, and it ends up being very elegant and raw as a result.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Spam time, one more time. This man has played with Stephan Grapelli and Frank Zappa. He's the best jazz fiddle improvisor I can name. Jean-Luc Picard Ponty.

The old man is cool. Look how he checks out his band for good vibes before he even starts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW2MSGRiJys

2 days off, my time to shine on electric fiddle.

-edit- Barcus Berry fiddles are now made in Romania and they don't make them 5-string with the low viola C anymore.

Still, for $400 now $700, apparently I purchased at a good time for buyers, https://reverb.com/p/barcus-berry-barcu … gKHQPD_BwE it's a hot fiddle. I need to start playing it, I've had it for six months and have played it 3 hours. Shit, I have a brand new Fender Mustang to play it through, what the hell am I sitting on my hands for?

Sorry, too much information. It helps me if I write it down in public, though. It makes it a personal challenge.

That is a thick sound. I like it. Christ there's a lot of reverb on it. Cocteau Twins levels of reverb, and a somewhat similar drum sound and lack of actual lyrics even though there are vocals. Yeah, this is just Metal Cocteau Twins with a side of Future Sound Of London. big_smile
