I'm blown away.

This station has more to give.
Always weird, sometimes too extreme even for my taste.
Just finished "Tales of the Far East", now it's TECHNOGRAMMA - some sort of - erm, did I say weird already - hiphop/rap. Or psychedelic rap? Right now it sounds like Damo Suzuki on the streets of Chicago, just him and a Ghettoblaster... cool

Yeah, I can relate. I sampled their programming for a full day back when I first discovered them. This is probably the only station where I've heard Dukes of Chutney, Charlie Parker and The Scorpions mixed b2b in the space of 10 minutes. I wouldn't call it my thing (I generally like my grooves a bit more linear), but it was cheerfully challenging.

Now playing; https://soundcloud.com/buttersessions/b … paper-cuts

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I'm trying to figure out how to save johnraff's Radio France stream link in vlc (it plays beautifully, btw). There is a Save Playlist, but it seems to want to save the currently playing track, or something. The Icecat Radio Directory has one Radio France station, but it is a different one. And the vlc documentation appears to be very old (like, 2011 or so). Confusing.

PS - I've been listening to it for about 30 minutes. Great music selection, and great sound!

Just right-click on the link here, Save as...
VLC not required.

Thank you. Ok, I did that, and I can open the file in vlc and it shows the link. But trying to play it does not work.

If I use the vlc Open menu, then Open Network Stream, it remembers the link from last night, and that will play. In the Playlist frame, the two look identical, except the one I opened from the saved link has no duration, while the one opened from the remembered stream shows a duration of 28 seconds. Also, the icon with the saved link looks like an empty document, but the one from the remembered stream looks like a world globe.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

This is working for me. Create a text file with the content...

https://icecast.radiofrance.fr/fip-hifi.aac

and name the file fip.m3u, then open it in a media player. 192kbps bitrate.

If you want 128kbps for some reason, replace the content with...

https://icecast.radiofrance.fr/fip-midfi.mp3

Apologies for the repost, #1 in my rotation of music videos. Lee "Scratch" Perry ft. Brian Eno, "Here Come the Warm Dreads" (2019)

Eno as the mushroom cloud clown is the bomb, pun intended.

I'm starting to get the hang of it, thanks. I have the fip_hifi, fiprock, fipjazz, and WREK Atlanta. It is fairly difficult to find actual stream URLs, these days.

https://stream.radiofrance.fr/fipelectro/fipelectro.m3u8?id=radiofrance format: hls, bitrate: 0

And this is what I did:
- disregard the .mru8 files
- Save actual stream URLs in a file (I use one file per actual radio station, but that's a matter of preference), one URL per line, nothing else.
- Save that file with an .m3u extension
- Should open in all streaming-capable media players

Thank you. Ok, I did that, and I can open the file in vlc and it shows the link. But trying to play it does not work.

I'm sorry, I'm sure this worked mith mpv yesterday, but now it doesn't. Facit: my brain was not performing well last night.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

.mru8 files usually play OK for me, in mpv or radiotray-ng.
What the latter didn't like, though, was the ?id=radiofrance ending.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

One last (maybe) point of confusion.

All of the URLs given in that thread point to icecast.radiofrance.fr. My vlc has an Icecast Radio Directory. If I click on that, it eventually displays hundreds of streams to choose from. However, only one of them is a Radio France stream: "RadioFranceCaraibes //". Where are all the others, or, why does the Icecast Radio Directory not show them?

Re: What are you listening to right now?

No idea, but I can't find fip.fr using the Icecast website either. Maybe their Search function sucks?

Can you create the local file(s) and play it? Can you copy/paste the URL into Vlc and play it?

Re: What are you listening to right now?

New solo works by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, Suite: April 2020 (embedded player in the link)...

https://www.npr.org/2020/06/12/87510295 … our-moment

At least listen to "Family Harmony", it's amazing piano playing. Then skip the next track and play "Don't Let It Bring You Down" and "New York State Of Mind" instead.

My favorite living pianist, with apologies to Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. RIP Billy Preston, Esbjörn Svensson and Vince Guaraldi.

Anyone else want to list their top 6 keyboard players?

Keith Jarret, Lyle Mays and Chick Corea brings me to nine. Except for Billy Preston, all jazz pianists (yes, Stevie is a jazz pianist, among many other genres).

Number ten, a classical pianist who covers Radiohead, Christopher O'Riley. Or maybe jazz keyboardist George Duke, especially with Zappa. Over-nite Sensation is one of the best recordings of all time, IMO.

Check out the track Fifty-Fifty featuring solos by Duke, Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin, and Zappa. Zappa crushes it, an amazing guitar solo. Peak Zappa densness. Densocity. Densaciousness. He plays a lot of notes with a thick, pick-heavy sound in a short time span. I'll guess that it's a customized SG he's playing, safe guess.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACYfndr1DwY

Zomby Woof is outstanding. There's incredible guitar playing, great vocals and subtle Duke keyboards on I Am The Slime.
