Re: What are you listening to right now?

Yesterday was the first time I went out properly since the pandemic started: first time I went on public transport, first time I went into the heart of the city to hang out in a few bars.
It was a hot night, people milling about everywhere. Hardly anybody is wearing facemasks.
The night bus home was packed, and I felt more than a little queasy. Packed buses are germ incubators at the best of times. I forgot to put my facemask on - I would have been one of two people in the whole bus, had I done so.
Nevertheless, it was a glorious summer night.
I listened to some Bagel Radio.
There's a few YT embeds in that article.
I think my favourite is the very first one: I LIKE TRAINS - The Truth (Official Video).
I wish there was a way to extract the whole lyrics (edit: surprisingly, there is).
Listening to it was great, but the video is a lot of fun, too. The lip sync is uncanny.

Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper just came up on my playlist, modern recording techniques have nothing over this digitally remastered 1976 recording except for more cowbell...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Some fine art, Bernstein interpreting 'Das Lied von der Erde' by Gustav Mahler (The Song of the Earth, composed in 1908-1909). German might not be the most pleasant spoken language to the ear, but set it to music and man is it powerful.

Not great equalization on this recording, sorry.

-edit- A better link is in the post below. /edit

A heavy thunderstorm broke here just now while the first female song was playing. Sturm und drang FTW.

For way better sound quality, and a way better interpretation and performance, here's the Deutsche Grammophon recording of Herbert von Karajan und Berliner Philharmonika (1987)...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I hadn't heard this before. The Who - Eminence Front (promo video mix). A horrible recording, but excellent guitar and production in general...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI_npEyjgxA

I don't understand how Pete doesn't get more respect for his guitar parts. Keith Richards as well, but he plays lead guitar way less than Pete does, or maybe just leads with more subtlety.

No way, Pete's the better guitarist. Eminence Front (Outside Lands Festival 2017)

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ liked it the first time you shared (and yes, stuff does tend to get lost amid hasselhoff's barfing, but I always make it a point to double skim). Frankly, I like this version of iLikeTrains (or however they style their name these days) better. A proper dense post-rock sound, as opposed to the more pseudo-tropical happy shit or sparse "one-chord with lots of echo/sustain per verse to signify melancholia" thing they and so many other from that sub-genre have overdone to death. As for the lip sync, well, works better on some than others. Easy for the Obnoxious Combover, harder for chaps like the Russian Bear Wrestler, and probably impossible for that Zuckerfaced alien.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Here's some more puke, 2017 dub reggae from the London artist who calls himself Gaudi...

https://gaudimusic.bandcamp.com/album/gaudi-magnetic

I'm listening to 'Nocturnal Sonata' right now. I've also heard '30Hz Dub Prelude' and 'Memories In My Pentagram', those two I've added to my latest radio show episode. This is really good dub.

Didn't know they've been doing it for over a decade already... Listening to their earliest album on bandcamp - I see what you mean.
I heard this other style during the first minute of "The Truth" too, some sort of "cheap hotelroom in the morning hangover ballad", and did not like it. Then it morphs into something very different...
