Re: What are you watching right now?

One of my favourite documentaries about music of all times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cjEHWjOBEg In this video, and I didn't know this before seeing this for the first time years ago, Bernstein reminds me very much of my late music teacher -- theory (history, composition, harmonics, interpretation), classical guitar, and piano -- who, very much at the same age as Bernstein here, tought me a lot of the same things that are expressed in the video.

^ I could never get into actual far-eastern films (except some studio Gibhli) - somehow they always seem to deal with problems that seem silly to me. Let's see if this makes it more enjoyable.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Yesterday night I saw Duel (1971), a Spielberg horror movie. I liked how simple yet effective it is. 90m of relaxed viewing...

I really LIKE 1970s movies. So many great releases came out back then.

Re: What are you watching right now?

@Sector11, I hope you watch this. Blue Angels and Thunderbirds fly over NYC. Forget the financial discussion and check out the in-flight photography, it's fish-eyed big-time and it's awesome...

Second shot, all the canopies closing together. That looks straight out of Aliens.

-edit- My word, that in-flight refuel looks absolutely surreal. Today I learned some jet aircraft have side-view mirrors.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Going well back before the seventies to the fifties. Burt Lancaster stars, Burt Lancaster directs in The Kentuckian (1955)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd-oyb4MHq4

And now right back to the seventies.

So John Wayne (@cog, you listening?) always played himself, arguably, until the seventies when things shifted and he realized he'd been an asshole to Clint Eastwood, and he finally did two cop films where he played himself instead of westerns or some smarmy stoic guy where he plays himself. The stoic cop prototype, way before Commando and Ahnold but after Connery and Eastwood, he played Brannigan and McQ...

Re: What are you watching right now?

i just watched the road https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El6fxciKhn8.  Pretty decent post-apocalyptic fare, and true enough to the book.  Has some interesting touches (won't spoil) that flesh out the book a little, and all in all was worth the trouble of watching.

Last night, we watched an old DVD of Down From the Mountain, a movie of a concert of the music from O' Brother Where Art Thou? We enjoyed it just as much as we did back in the day.

The most bizarre thing to air on TV since Monty Python. Here's a clip from the last episode of Twin Peaks...

Re: What are you watching right now?

^ you and your superlatives.
It's supposed to be somebody's dream, duh.
I actually remember that one.
Speaking of Monty Python, Fear and loathing in Las Vegas is certainly much, much more bizarre! It's drug induced, duh.
Nothing is more bizarre than normal people having fun; I have experienced that horror myself many times, any saturday night in any city will do.
Also I saw Lisa Simpson do that same backwards-yet-forwards-speaking thing in season 7 - which was apparently after Twin Peaks.

Re: What are you watching right now?

Unforgiven, I haven't seen it in years. I remember that there's a lot of bullshit film making, but there are some scenes that are genius. The opening shot...

Screenshot-2020-05-08-00-08-00.png

Also the last shot in the movie, so that's the crap I'm complaining about.

Re: What are you watching right now?

^I'm not a film buff, but do enjoy one occasionally.

A couple of years ago my wife suggested we see a film by Korean director Lee Sang-il, set in Hokkaido in the Meiji era. Turned out to be pretty good, though violent. Thought to myself "seemed like a Clint Eastwood film" (without ever having seen one roll).

Turned out Yurusarezaru Mono is indeed a remake of Eastwood's "Unforgiven"! The plot is pretty much identical. Not bad at all, if you get a chance to see it.
