Github now banning people who upload YT-dl or any other repos that's been taken down due to a DMCA takedown order:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/s … -takedown/
Looks like there will be an exodus from Github to Gitlab and others, but RIAA might even go after these git sites.

I would say: YUP, sooner or later they will go after all of them.
Isn't it interesting, they can "sell us" all over the place BUT ....

I am sure just like with Napster back in the day people will still keep using it. The code is everywhere now, so I am sure there will be people who'll keep YT-dl going no matter what.

Of both of those above I have no doubt at all.

I love youtube-dl and use it often. As long as there's a way, I'll keep using it.
And YT will make changes that keep breaking it. An unending cycle.

It happens weekly. The update process is slower right now which is why I pondered whether they will move to an update URL that can't be DMCAd.

Well you see people what kind of world this is.
Brand protection is what they do, they don't care about the small fishes.
Like with Instagram, brands are protected the smaller sellers are on their own and constantly blocked.
It is not just the internet it is how those that run the world work.

The only way would be to have the repo hosted in a country that does not recognize the DMCA such as the 7 listed below:
The Best DMCA Ignored Countries: Our Top Picks
The Netherlands – Its staunch support of free speech and user privacy makes it a safe haven for both DMCA content and politically motivated websites.
Luxembourg – The US-based DMCA has no effect here, and many hosting companies vow to always keep your content online.
Bulgaria – Companies that choose to offer DMCA ignored hosting enjoy the Bulgarian government’s very lenient approach to copyright law.
Russia – Communism might have taken a hit, but American copyright laws are about as irrelevant today as they’ve ever been.
Hong Kong – Local markets are filled with bootleg copies of copyrighted works, and the same leniency is shown towards hosting companies.
Singapore – The hosting capital of southeast Asia is home to many offshore and DMCA ignored hosts, operating almost worry-free.
Malaysia – Personal details aren’t required, payments can be made entirely in bitcoin, and the local copyright system has nothing to do with the DMCA.

And so far youtube-dl have kept up with it.
I hope this unpleasant incident will not cause too much fragmentation, or people just backing off.
The software is sound; the only reason the RIAA had any standing with their takedown demand is because youtube-dl devs used links to copyrighted material in their documentation. And maybe a different name should've been chosen.
Anyhow, development happily continues on gitlab.com (find the youtube-dl repo with a familiar maintainer, lots of stars and activity).
As for the topic title:
I'm surprised how people think they can keep on forking and trying to fix the problem on github...
Also, told you so... over 2 years ago...
The 2020.11.01.1 version works.

^It's not a long list, perhaps Liberland should be included LoL
The bad news is the yad script I scribbled for Yt-dl that also checks for new versions on start is now broken because it used the github page to check for current versions. And likely another user's script for raspberry pi that I contributed.

Maybe if the devs took the links out in their docs that the RIAA is crying about maybe that would been a better outcome.

youtube-dl -U

^ Yep.

You nailed it, Sherlock.
Problem is, the RIAA did it already, they claim that the software as such is illegal, the legal ball is rolling, and afaics the original repo is still down and even the owners can't get to it until this is resolved.
People are discussing the RIAA's claim against the software itself, but I'm positive it would not have come to that if those links weren't in the docs (and also in some example code or comments). Like a drop of blood in shark-infested waters...
I haven't seen any offending links to copyrighted YT material in the gitlab repos, but I didn't look deep.
I just hope gitlab is a good enough alternative to be safe from shenanigans like this in the future. Somehow I'm not too sure it is.

Awesome news! Great to see EFF on the ball here and hopefully no more projects get taken down by unwarranted DMCA takedowns.
Github finally sees the light and is working to protect legitimate projects from DMCA actions and to ensure that projects follow the law as required by the DMCA.

Here's the letter the EFF wrote:

It's an easy read and confirms what I knew all along: the RIAA's claim that youtube-dl circumvents some sort of encryption or DRM is bogus technobabble.
