Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

Thanks, it's a fixie (no freewheel, if the bike is moving the cranks are turning) from a local company (designed and assembled here in Charleston, the steel manufacturing is done in China. It's gone up in price since the Trump embargo, I paid $300 plus sales tax). The wheels and frame are nearly indestructible. I've pounded on these wheels, hit potholes, railroad tracks, gravel roads, but after two years of abuse they are still 95% trued. The bike is a tank. If you buy a Specialized, you'll have trued your wheels a dozen times by now over the same conditions. 10/10, would recommend.

My customizations are minimal. I've removed the rear brake. Riser bar was an option instead of bullhorns, which I roll forward which is a bit weird in some peoples eyes but gives me more room when I'm in a tuck than the standard position, then I changed the grips and added a water bottle cage and a rear rack, which I'm going to have to replace soon, it's really getting bent. I'm about to replace the grips and light-brown saddle (not shown), but that is a cheap upgrade. The grips cost about $40, the saddle replacement is only $15 if you install it yourself. The rack is about $40 as well.

Decided to ride to the park at sunset after a rain shower, it was a good call. The rainbow and contrast were better looking IRL but here's the unedited phone photo, I didn't want to GIMP it...

-edit- They name the model "Holy Roller" after Charleston, which is known as "The Holy City".

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

No problem. When I tell people that I keep birds, they always assume they are locked in cages. Mine are out all day long from 8am until bedtime. I occasionally I have to lock them in for their own safety.

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

So I wake up and find out that there was massive property destruction by protesters last night in downtown Charleston.

This makes no sense. We held prayer vigils over the Emanuel Church shooting, there was absolutely no violence. Why would we riot over one death in Minneapolis, over police brutality in other parts of the country? These can't be locals inciting the violence, we don't do that here. These are the restaurants, hotels and shops THAT WE WORK AT!

There is something very nefarious going on. I'm confused and heartbroken, this is not my beautiful city. No cheer from me today.

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

I just rode down King Street where most of the rioting took place. It looks like a hurricane hit, every other storefront is boarded up. Local businesses that have absolutely nothing to do with police brutality. Also, Charleston PD is one of the best trained and most lawful police departments I've ever seen in a US city, and I've lived in Boston, Miami, W. Palm Beach, Baltimore, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Hartford and Nashville. And there were still people marching shouting "Black Lives Matter" as volunteers were sweeping up all the broken glass and nailing plywood over the broken windows.

These are not locals. Like a said before, the poor black and white (me) people here WORK AT THOSE BUSINESSES. This is being stirred up by some outside group.

Sorry to vent, I'm really upset. This is bothering me as much as 9/11 did. It has the same air of conspiracy about it, and it's at my front door.

When violence struck Emanuel Church, black and white people formed prayer circles in Marion Square. It was the birth of the slogan "Charleston Strong". This isn't how Charleston would react to police brutality. We're passive-aggressive. People here don't even say "Fuck you", they say "Bless your little heart" or, if they're really pissed off, "Have a blessed day."

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

^ Awesome. Can we get some context?

Here's some art I saw a few months ago at a local hotel (The Vendue)...

20200103-121106.jpg

20200103-121120.jpg

The bee is a big bug, about two-thirds of a metre long. That's a meter if your not British (or French), and that's about two feet long if you are British (but not French). I love the measurement game, it's fun!

The neon (fish?) was twice that size, it was a gorgeous installation.

Oh, you have got to be kidding me. That is too good. Let's just agree to call her apartment Eagle Point.

Hornets from nearby base are practising their manouvers above our lake every summer. I don't mind, there's enough space for them too.

I went to tidy my daughters play area while she was napping. I found that she's started to fit shapes in her shape sorter and stack her rings while alone playing.

This, I thought was quite cheery smile

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

It always amazes me how soon something that started as a rather helpless baby leaves everything else in the animal kingdom behind. Add to this that even the most advanced so called AIs and face recognition systems can be thrown off their tracks by things that are not troubling young children. AI and machine learning are badly hyped, children are not.
