Cheery Pic of the Day

Post your happy pictures! Thumbnails not required.

Here's one from January, a sunrise shot from my doorstep. Looking at the elevated highway off-ramp, a house on stilts (flood zone, it's all swamp behind that house, then there's a creek under the overpass/highway that drains it all into the Cooper River, then Charleston Harbor a few miles downstream and finally the Atlantic Ocean), a cellphone tower, a telephone pole, a nice lamppost and some cars...

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

Sometimes that chipmunk, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a chipmunk, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip your Westie to pieces.

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

Caught a huge carp the other day on accident.  Nearly had a heart attack until I saw it since we thought it was a trout.  Faught like crazy.  I hear the Scott and Polish community love them.

Did you eat it?

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

I could see how this pic is grim, but I like yellow cars, I like old Beamers, and I like grey days in old cities. There's a horse carriage, there's a women in pink and black, there's a wrought iron gate and a gas lantern, they have mail and it's for rent. If only I had the money...  I consider it cheery. Also melancholy, so not cheery at all, but it cheers me up.

20200103-111815.jpg

The slightly blue-green tint of the windshield and the green lights in the background that echo the headlights... good. I mean, it's no giant carp, but it's good.

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

^ nothing grim about it: well-kept wooden houses - and cars. A quiet street lined with trees. And - is that a horse carriage by the traffic lights? Or a Riksha?

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

Horse carriage tour(s), they're a popular tourist attraction here, but controversial. The problem is it gets really, really hot and humid in the summer here, and horses will end up stumbling or rearing or flat-out collapsing as a result. I'm not a fan, but there are 6 or so carriage tour businesses that have been operating for years, local economy, the city and the companies have worked together to set rules about when it's too hot to run the tours, the horses (or donkeys, a couple of the companies use two donkeys instead of one work-horse) are supposedly rotated and get taken out of the city and put to pasture for awhile, yada yada yada... It also contributes to other businesses, there are a couple of companies that get hired to shovel up/ hose down the horse poop (the carriage driver drops a marker when the horse poops, easier to look for the marker than horse dung with swarming flies). They rig the horses with urine catchers (a rubber tube/bucket thing) but it still can make downtown smell like a filthy locker room from the horses' sweat, urine and feces.

Some of the millionaires downtown will hang banners on their slave-built historical $15 million mansions either pro or anti carriage company. Charleston has a great quality of life for the most part, but the US south and Charleston specifically is still really weird in its good-ol'-boy politics ways. Charleston is one of the poster children for "white privelage" in the US, IMO.

Nothing like the suburbs here, though. Hilton Head, Kiawah Island and Isle of Palms are almost flat-out gated towns. It's a big club, and you ain't in it (George Carlin).

Hmm, I'm not doing great with the "cheery" thing here, am I?

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

Lol, no you aren't. Still a nice picture, despite the horse carriage.
Interesting view of your town, thanks for that.
I usually try to bite down that remark, but this time I'll say it: I'm glad I don't live in the USA.
If you ever think you've had enough, come to the EU! It's not paradise but most parts certainly beat this particular description. Except Hungary.

Thank you. They are all rehomes that just happened to be pretty, they were chosen because they needed homes (people could not look after them, some had cats, some wanted cats, some just didn't have time or space) and not for their beauty smile

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

I bought a motorcycle and had to ride it home some fifty miles. I didn't have a helmet with me, only a pair of sunglasses. The wind was burning my eyes, so I stopped halfway back at a service station and bought some duct tape.

Re: Cheery Pic of the Day

^I know, you explained it when I gave you crap about keeping birds a few years ago. Bird rescue is honorable, I'm sorry for that criticism.

@ohnonot, I've thought about it, until I moved to Charleston. Some pros...

It's a food and beverage town. Hundreds of restaurants and bars.

No skyscrapers by law. Just... look at it. It looks like the historically preserved cities of Europe...

https://caldwellcommercial.com/wp-conte … kyline.jpg

Beaches, I can bike to Sullivan's Island in a half-hour.

Great weather all year long. I don't own a car here, I have a bicycle and I can take an Uber or a taxi to the airport or rent a car if I need to get out of town. My bike commute to the restaurant I work at is seven minutes. Also, people don't litter or graffiti things downtown, and the only substantial crime is bicycle theft, and even that is pretty minor. 7 miles north in North Charleston is a different story altogether, I think it's #28 on the list of highest per-capita murder rates in the country.

Charleston, although it has a college (College of Charleston) right downtown and therefore a huge party scene, is still essentially a family town. People keep their shit together here, or they get ostracized.

Manners are one of the highest priorities here. We pride ourselves on civility. Look how we handled the Emanual Church massacre. No riots, no destruction of property, blacks and whites expressing solidarity, the birth of the phrase "Charleston Strong".

Also, I've made it my responsibility to feed the fucking cats.
