There is risk-balancing going on there. Closing schools may cause greater problems ATM, so that isn't a 'phoney' reason at all.

If hospitals can't be staffed sufficiently because the personnel are home looking after kids, the health outcomes for all ill people will be significantly worse. Covid-19 will be a nuisance for most who catch it, not an existential crisis, so there is a "greater good" to be factored in here.

We won't know which countries' approaches produced the best outcomes overall until it has all died down.

UK government's coronavirus advice – and why it gave it

Schools

While school closures can be effective in the case of a flu pandemic, large-scale shutdowns are not thought to be an obvious next step in dealing with the virus in the UK, the government said. Closures would have to be at least 13 weeks long to reduce the peak of Covid-19 by 10-15%. Measures such as self-isolation for seven days for those with symptoms, as advised by the government, have been modelled and are shown to be much more effective. Experts also believe it would be difficult for school closures to work in practice, as children off school would end up socialising anyway or spending time with grandparents, who would be worse-affected by the virus. Schools will be asked to stop foreign trips.

Re: covid-19 virus

I'm waiting for all the governments of the world to come together to unilaterally approve some bill to spy on everyone permanently - outlawing encryption, activating full-time gps tracking, forcing every single app to phone home somewhere, overriding OS privacy controls, etc - all in the name of disease control or some similar sounding weasel excuse. "Ads will keep you safe, people. Tracking is good for you. Trust the world government. We will save you from yourselves." In ten years, we'll probably be seeking refuge in North Korea.

On the bright side, if Sector11's linked chart is to be believed, we can at least celebrate the founding of a new country. Welcome to the atlas, Cruise Ship.

Re: covid-19 virus

Now the WHO chief calls Europe the "epicentre of the Corona pandemic". Our "rates" of infection are eclipsing what China was suffering (and perhaps the US has yet to suffer or not).

At least in one thing Europe is leading the world ahead of the US and China.

That WHO chief, he is absolutely right.

Whatever scripts drive that site they are a little shaky, countries came and went throughout the day today.

Anyway, comparing rates of infection between countries is pretty speculative.

*) Only cases which are reported can be...

There are quite likely more cases in the US and Africa than currently appear on charts.

You missed that:

(*) “those aren’t large gatherings because the kids are in their classrooms”

That’s the phoney reason they gave. I’d have prefered the more honest answer you gave.

Slightly off topic but is good albeit long read about the 1918 flu pandemic:

(Regarding 'infections', why do I find google-analytics scripts on a CDC web site?)

Re: covid-19 virus

Just in case anyone is interested:

I made a little something for my conky today

${execi 6000 bash wget https://corona.help/country/germany -O $HOME/data/corona_raw && cat $HOME/data/corona_raw | grep h1 | sed -e 's/<[^>]*>//g' >  $HOME/data/corona }
${execpi 6000 sed -n '2p' $HOME/data/corona} Corona-Infectionen in DE
${execpi 6000 sed -n '3p' $HOME/data/corona} Tote ${execpi 600 sed -n '4p' $HOME/data/corona} Genesene${color}

As I see it the information seems be gathered from the page S11 already posted amongst others but is easier for me to process so i took corona.help as my source (without any warranty on the accuracy)
It should be easy to change the location to your needs..

Re: covid-19 virus

^ We're beautifully on track to fit that exponential curve, I guess.

Edit:

Here is a curl &jq command that exetracts the data directly from the API:

curl -s 'https://services9.arcgis.com/N9p5hsImWXAccRNI/arcgis/rest/services/Z7biAeD8PAkqgmWhxG2A/FeatureServer/1/query?f=json&where=(Confirmed%20%3E%200)%20AND%20(Deaths%3E0)&returnGeometry=false&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&outFields=*' | jq -r '.features[].attributes|select(.Country_Region=="Germany")|"Confirmed: \(.Confirmed) Deaths: \(.Deaths) Recovered: \(.Recovered)"'

I suspect that N9p5hsImWXAccRNI and Z7biAeD8PAkqgmWhxG2A might be session tokens and the URL become invalid, but who knows. You may filter by another country by adjusting the name. You could put it into your Bash prompt...

I pasted this code into my .conkyrc and restarted conky. Not much happens apart from the labels showing up. What should I have done instead? Or am I just impatient, I don't know the significance of "6000".

I have typed the wget and cat commands into a terminal and they seem to work OK.

Re: covid-19 virus

@ Martin
maybe 6000 seconds are way to much and it my be possible that execi waits this intervall befor executing the command... but i don't think so..

This set aside I experienced some lacking too though I don't know why.. That's why I created a script containing an infinte loop and put it in the autostart. This also takes some load from conky.

#!/bin/bash
#
# covid-19 aka coronavirus status monitoring for conky
# naik-nlz
#

while inotifywait -qqe modify "$HOME/data/corona"
    do
     sleep 3m &&
     wget https://corona.help/country/germany -O $HOME/data/corona_raw &&
     cat $HOME/data/corona_raw | grep h1 | sed -e 's/<[^>]*>//g' >  $HOME/data/corona
    done

But if it comes to copy and paste you may also go with the curl command of twoion
just call it like:

${execi 360 curl -s 'https://services9.arcgis.com/N9p5hsImWXAccRNI/arcgis/rest/services/Z7biAeD8PAkqgmWhxG2A/FeatureServer/1/query?f=json&where=(Confirmed%20%3E%200)%20AND%20(Deaths%3E0)&returnGeometry=false&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&outFields=*' | jq -r '.features[].attributes|select(.Country_Region=="Germany")|"Confirmed: \(.Confirmed) Deaths: \(.Deaths) Recovered: \(.Recovered)"'}

and you should be ready to go...

That's the command I used, except I put it in a script so I could use connectiontest, and do some formatting.

That works in a conky as well, thanks twoion and Niak

Germany and Argentina set up for once a day and Canada setup to run only once when the conky (conky v1.9) starts.  I shut down every night,

Germany:
${execpi 86400 curl -s 'https://services9.arcgis.com/N9p5hsImWXAccRNI/arcgis/rest/services/Z7biAeD8PAkqgmWhxG2A/FeatureServer/1/query?f=json&where=(Confirmed%20%3E%200)%20AND%20(Deaths%3E0)&returnGeometry=false&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&outFields=*' | jq -r '.features[].attributes|select(.Country_Region=="Germany")|"C: \(.Confirmed) D: \(.Deaths) R: \(.Recovered)"'}

Argentina:

Canada:
${pre_exec curl -s 'https://services9.arcgis.com/N9p5hsImWXAccRNI/arcgis/rest/services/Z7biAeD8PAkqgmWhxG2A/FeatureServer/1/query?f=json&where=(Confirmed%20%3E%200)%20AND%20(Deaths%3E0)&returnGeometry=false&spatialRel=esriSpatialRelIntersects&outFields=*' | jq -r '.features[].attributes|select(.Country_Region=="Canada")|"C: \(.Confirmed) D: \(.Deaths) R: \(.Recovered)"'}

Canada added after the image created.

Both, Naik's script and twoion's curl line have stopped working for me.
And the two websites are not saying the same thing for Argentina

Neither of them has caught up with what's here.

Empty stores and lines of people waiting in front of drugstores. Forbidden gatherings of people and travel ban to other countries. We had that in the nineties for years so it's nothing new for us. We got used to this. All of this is new for you so it must be harder for you.

Here's a map of the German counties and states that have declared an emergency situation in response to Corona: https://0x0.st/imwG.png It shows who is on top of their game.

This warn app (NINA) is released by the BKK (disaster protection agency) and is actually supposed to transparently and timely warn citizens of imminent danger and hazards.

The fact that the thunderstorms of early February this year caused a redder map than covid19 is very disappointing. Yet another neglected communications channel that I thought would be worthwhile to monitor (which is why I had the app on my mobile phone in the first place).

An app like they for covid19 alone would be nice.  Plug in a country and get results.
