^ so true.

i once met a friend who i don't see so often.
i was now in a relationship with a mutual aquaintance.
he was intrigued, asked for how long already, and then asked:
"are you already at the stage where you fart in front of each other?"

oh, there's more gems in that article!

The French government started to build up an infrastructure based on Matrix as a replacement for WhatsApp&Co.

It's usable on Debian with the desktop version of riot. Actually one might think about setting up a #BĹ channel there one day.

Re: Cool Random Internet Stuff

I don't know if anybody remembers my thread about a minimal C++ raytracer on the #! forums:

https://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=36875

Well here's an updated version, this time of a path tracer using the Monte Carlo method to generate an image of a modified Cornell Box:

smallpt: Global Illumination in 99 lines of C++

Here's the image (spoiler alert!):

https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2018/04/28/image.png

Features on display: reflection, refraction, soft shadows, indirect lighting, caustics glasses

And for the more adventurous:

Minilight, a minimal global illumination renderer

Re: Cool Random Internet Stuff

Should thef*ck be included by default in BL? lol lol

Would make perfect match with the

Defaults        insults

config options, in 'sudo visudo'. (See this for example ...)

And, yes, there is debian package:

$ apt-cache show thef*ck
Package: thef*ck
Version: 3.11-2
Installed-Size: 222
Maintainer: Alessio Treglia <alessio@debian.org>
Architecture: all
Depends: python-colorama, python-decorator, python-psutil, python-six, python2.7, python:any (>= 2.7.5-5~), python-pathlib2
Description-en: spelling corrector of console commands
 The F*ck attempts to fix user's command line mistakes, by
 composing new commands applying a series of matching rules.
 It supports various shells, such as bash, fish, tcsh, and
 zsh.

 This package provides the Python 2 version of The F*ck as
 python-pathlib currently lacks Python 3 support. Furthermore
 the 'sudo' matching rule has been disabled for users' safety.
...

Example usage:

$ puthon
No command 'puthon' found, did you mean:
 Command 'python' from package 'python-minimal' (main)
 Command 'python' from package 'python3' (main)
zsh: command not found: puthon

$ f*ck
python [enter/↑/↓/ctrl+c]
Python 3.4.2 (default, Oct  8 2014, 13:08:17)
...

"QOwnNotes is the open source (GPL) plain-text file notepad with markdown support and todo list manager for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Windows by Patrizio Bekerle (pbek on GitHub and IRC), that (optionally) works together with the notes application of ownCloud or Nextcloud.

All notes are stored as plain-text files on your desktop computer. Sync them over devices (desktop & mobile) with your ownCloud or Nextcloud sync client. Use ownCloud Notes to edit your notes in the web."

If it's about notes and getting them synchronized, you may want to have a look at CopyQ as well (just posted about it). It has a plugin for Synchronization, even in combination with encryption. I installed Zim desktop wiki ages ago and somehow never started to actually use it...  lol

Re: Cool Random Internet Stuff

^Oh ... I understood the sync hype, but it is not applicable to me ... I don't have all those *clouds and whatnot. I just like better look and more options in QOwnNotes.

CopyQ ... I'm sure this is nice piece of software, but somehow I manage to do everything with Ctrl-{c,v,x} or  Ctrl-Alt-{c,v} in urxvt. Thanks for the recommendation, though.

Re: Cool Random Internet Stuff

Not really Cool Random Internet Stuff ... but probably worth mentioning: EFAIL vulnerabilities in OpenPGP and S/MIME.

...
The EFAIL attacks exploit vulnerabilities in the OpenPGP and S/MIME standards to reveal the plaintext of encrypted emails. In a nutshell, EFAIL abuses active content of HTML emails, for example externally loaded images or styles, to exfiltrate plaintext through requested URLs.
...
The attacker changes an encrypted email in a particular way and sends this changed encrypted email to the victim. The victim's email client decrypts the email and loads any external content, thus exfiltrating the plaintext to the attacker.
...

I'm not sure how exploitable this is IRL, but somehow it seems dangerous enough. I hope they will fix that soon.

Re: Cool Random Internet Stuff

A search on google-analytics (wanted to know if I was right to have it disabled in noscript) brought up this page:
Google Analytics and privacy: What you need to know
Had a look round the site and found this:
The ultimate guide to desktop Linux security
I know the web is awash with helpful sites these days, but this one seemed to have a lot of quite readable articles on privacy/security/censorship - aimed at general computer users, not Linux-specific - that looked reasonably correct in the advice they gave:
https://www.comparitech.com/

They did seem to be promoting a specific VPN provider a bit, but otherwise not bad I thought, for us unter-geeks. smile
