Tracking Hurricane Dorian

I'm in Charleston, SC, and I'm not evacuating. It's going to be hairy. I like CNN's storm tracker on a computer browser. I'm using the Weather Channel app on my Android phone. The track, satellite, radar and forecast...

https://www.cnn.com/interactive/storm-tracker/

Just look at that thing! It's found its home. It looks like a cat curling up in its favorite spot for a nap.

I'll take pics, and vids. Wish me luck.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

1:38pm EDT. Rain, grey, standing water. A typical British summer afternoon.

20190904_133720.md.jpg

Except the house shown is on stilts, I don't know how common that is in England. That pic reminds me, I need to pull the neighbor's trash bin back into the yard, away from the curb. Bad timing with that, everyone's trash and recycling bins are full and collection is late because of the storm and Labor Day. Everyone's bins will be knocked over by high winds, and all the trash will clog the storm drains and add to the toxicity of the flood water.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

2pm tracker update, it's grim. Thankfully looking like it will stay a 2 and not increase to a 3 or more. I've been in a dozen Cat 2s (and stronger), it's pretty hard to die in one.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

So cool. You can see in the second gif, "Current Radar" (click button to play it), that most of that first major band missed Charleston and hit farther south. We had some downpours this morning, but nothing sustained yet.

Good luck.

Just starting to get windy with some rain here on the outer edge of Dorian.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

Dead calm here ATM. A slight breeze and light rain. The sky is very white, I'd say #ECECEC. It's definitely eerie.

Spooky, even. In 12 hours we're going to really start seeing what's what.

@8bital, nice link. Thanks!

Edit- I have to say, the NOAA and European computer models have been on point for this storm. They didn't predict the slowdown in speed, nor the stall over the Bahamas, but the spaghetti models, the predicted track and wind speeds, have been pretty much dead on.

5:42, intermittent showers and gusty winds. 20mph one minute and totally still the next. The sky is the same flat grey-white color as before.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

I can't take them in, they wouldn't let me. They'd spray every corner and meow like crazy to get out. But, yes, they are my cats, we love each other. They've been through 2 hurricanes, a really cold winter (that's when I started feeding them almost 3 years ago, they were looking rough), a snow storm that left snow on the ground for 3 nights, and a hundred-year flood, they'll be fine.

This has to be the most stable storm I've ever seen in my 50+ years on the east coast. It's just been out there, this monster that could easily engulf Florida, its well-defined, massive eye churning out 100mph+ winds day after day, moving at under 10mph. The amount of energy it's consuming and producing... I'm staggered, it's incredible.

I just rode my bike a few blocks up the street to see a friend. A normal, rainy-day bicycle ride. Meanwhile, the satellite pics look like the Apocalypse.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

It's slowing down again, from 9mph to 8. The analogy to a cat napping is too good, this thing is in no rush to let the Gulf Stream drag it north and out to sea.

Re: Tracking Hurricane Dorian

10pm update, looking good. Still a Cat 2, still 110mph sustained winds, but tracking due North now instead of NNW. Charleston in barely within the Cone of Uncertainty in the latest predictions. Still super slow at 8mph.
