PSA for Hydrogen users: Debian 8 APT sources moved to Debian Archive

At the end of March, the Debian project announced that the APT sources for Debian Jessie would be partially moved to the archive, and only LTS packages would be kept on the servers. This change has now been implemented by Debian. Here's what that means for users of BunsenLabs Hydrogen (users of BL Helium can ignore this):

The jessie-updates repository does no longer exist. From your sources in /etc/apt/sources.list, you must remove all lines that match the following pattern:

deb <URL> jessie-updates <ignore this>
deb-src <URL> jessie-updates <ignore this>

The jessie-backports repository has been moved to archive.debian.org, and the release file of this repository is currently EXPIRED. If you are using backports repositories and wish to continue using them, edit any lines reading

deb <URL WITHOUT bunsenlabs.org> jessie-backports <ignore this>
deb-src <URL WITHOUT bunsenlabs.org> jessie-backports <ignore this>

to read

deb http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free
deb-src http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free

Additionally, execute the following lines in a terminal

echo 'Acquire::Check-Valid-Until "0";' | sudo tee /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10no-check-valid-until
sudo chmod 644 /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10no-check-valid-until

Note that all packages from debian.org's jessie-backports distribution will no longer receive updates.

After applying these changes,

sudo apt-get update

should now go through without errors.

Additionally, you (yes, you, a person like myself who still rides this version) need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian-jessie-backports.list to look something like

# added by bl-welcome
# Debian backports
#deb http://deb.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free

# april 2019 jessie moved to archive
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main contrib non-free

If you are using the Hydrogen armhf repositories, you need to remove all references to all 'jessie' repositories from sources.list too. This architecture is now totally unsupported for Jessie in debian.org's repositories. You can of course keep all bunsenlabs.org repositories enabled; these are still valid and won't go down.

^ Thanks, of course you're right. I wrote that off the top of my head while at work because I spotted two separate threads having this problem.

Ah, I just realised that my message looked like it was directed to you, I apologise. That was my attempt at humor, directed at any reader of the topic. big_smile

I've edited the OP to include the additional instructions.
