ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

Hey guys,

I decided to launch a blog. We'll see how much content I develop, but my main motivation is that I continually wind up reinstalling an OS from scratch (whether it be Windows or Linux) and following along with private GitHub gists to get the OS the way I want. Well, I decided to blog-ify all of that in hopes of helping others.

Check out https://scrub.tech.blog

My first post is about setting up Windows Subsystem for Linux to feature a GUI - XFCE4 on Ubuntu, to be exact. I know this isn't bunsen, but it's useful, and it's simple. Feel free to leave a comment smile

Thanks!

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

Looks interesting, and I'm sure there are people who will find its use ... but paying yet another 10Eur+ (X410) to run Ubuntu is against my idea of using linux to save money for operating system.

As of X410 ... you mention this is way to go, compared to VNC-like stuff. How about Xming, yet another 'native' (whatever it means) free Xserver on MSWindows? Would your setup work with Xming, instead of X410? I mean, from your blog post, in a nutshell, you seem to be installing everything necessary in CLI (WSL?), and then start GUI application with X410 as a Xserver. In this respect, any Xserver will do ... even one on another computer as long as they are connected by network?

BTW: nice blog, I'm definitely gonna read it!

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

Thanks! I use X410 simply because I found it to be more elegant than VLC in the past (and quite a bit quicker). I admit I'm not terribly sure how X410 even works in the first place. That said, it's not necessary to install X410 to use Ubuntu, it's just how I go about using a GUI desktop smile

I haven't looked at Xming. Part of my motivation for using an application directly from the M$ Store was that it would auto update...this is relevant to me, because Windows as of yet lacks an intuitive "upgrade all packages" option. Thanks for responding!

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

I did a little cli-only Debian install and most of my scripts are working just fine, various media transcoders, renamers, mediainfo, mostly stuff to do with video/audio editing, audio playback/alsa is not working (and didn't bother with why). Still fighting to get cmder working as it should thought.

Good work and nice instructions to the op.

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

You're welcome cloverskull.

And, now, I foresee that the /etc/apt/sources.list will soon be populated with lines like:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib win10wls

(There are no avaliable smileyface I could put here ... simultaneously outraged and resignation ... and laughing and crying ...)

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

Win10 + Linux = WLS

Seems MS is encroaching on Linus' territory and will he say MS is a cancer like what Ballmer called Linux a cancer back in the day?

So I am sure MS will someday roll their own distro with a Win10 interface and a Linux kernel...

Re: ScrubTech - a new nerd tech blog

Meh, I'm not one to hold grudges. Give me the computing platform that does all I need it to do, and I'm happy to have an open mind moving forward. MicroSoft is doing a lot right these days - Azure has more Linux VMs than Windows, and they don't care. Edge being built on top of Chromium. Expanding Defender to Apple (and Chrome?). Browser extensions to block malware...they're not perfect, by any means, but I'm willing to forgive the sins of Ballmer and move forward. I mean, he said that in 2001. What did any modern linux devs have to say in 2001 that would upset people nowadays?
