[MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

I'd have opened this in TGN if it allowed new posts, it prolly belongs there:

The run dialogue (gmrun) is a royal pain, you open it by mistake, there's no X to close it, well, you'd think Alt+F4 right?
Not in Virtualbox, that "Helpfully" prepends Ctrl to Alt if you hit the left one through ingrained habit... & you end up at a tty
I keep forgetting the OTHER alt works too, & end up typing

echo . /dev/null

Poor Alexa, I wonder how she likes /dev/null?

I'm forever messing up the other Alt+(something) keybinds too.

Hitting ESC closes gmrun.

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

or just type exit in the entry box.

I tried seeing if openbox rc.xml would decorate it but no good, wont even change its dimensions? Must be hardcoded to run like it does. I suppose it would be like trying to decorate dmenu, not possible.

        <application name="gmrun" class="Gmrun" type="dialog">
      <position force="yes">
        <x>center</x>
        <y>center</y>
      </position>
      <size>
        <height>30</height>
        <width>80</width>
      </size>
      <decor>yes</decor>
      <maximized>no</maximized>
    </application>

...

HINT!:

man gmrun

You can set width and placement using ~/.gmrunrc

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

I could mark it [PROPOSED-SOLUTION] not exactly "solved" till i break myself of 20+ years of ingrained Alt+F4 from Windows since 3.1, I can still see me hitting the habitual key combo 5 years from now, in the absence of a "shut it" [x] in the corner or [Cancel] button.

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

Bearded_Blunder maybe the window can be decorated with the devilspie.

apt update && apt install devilspie

then create /home/<YourUserName>/.devilspie/decorate_gmrun.ds
(If .devilspie dir doesn't exist create it)
paste next inside

(if
(matches (window_class) "Gmrun")
(begin
(decorate)
)
)

devilspie runs as a daemon.
You'd want to make it run on boot.

or solution 2 remap keys

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

Or even

sudo apt-purge gmrun

Then remove the menu item or point it at x-terminal-emulator.. after all if I know the command I want to run...

It's only a Gripe anyhow, not a real problem.
Expect on most installs I'll live with it & just cuss when I open it unintentionally.
Being at the top of the menu I seem to trigger it unintentionally, maybe I should put Terminal there, that's usually what I want anyhow.

On real hardware my habitual Alt+F4 works fine too.. it's the virtual ones I cuss at.

Oh, that's the most optimal solution.

Sometimes I use gmrun, other timees I use dmenu. Either way, I use the Esc key to close it, so I've gotten used to doing that. Anyway, easier to reach for one key than two, right? That thing about not being able to teach an old dog new tricks isn't always true!

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

Anyway Alt+F4 works fine to close gmrun on real hardware (as B_B said).

The problem isn't with gmrun but Virtualbox (and other virtualization software) tend to take over keybindings for their own purposes. You have to find workarounds.

Re: [MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS] Gripe

Fun because they all mess with keybinds in different ways too, at one stage I was using VmWare (player locally & ESXI via vSphere client), Virtualbox, and M$ Virtual PC all on the same machine, sometimes all at once & I was (still am)  forever using the wrong key combos for whichever VM I happen to be looking at. VPC died with the downgrade from 7 to 10.
