What madness is this ?!?! Running gnu/Linux apps in Win10 ?

I checked to make sure the date isn't April 1st (fools day) and it passed that one. So this could actually be legit then. I've given up on using Window$ anything on any personal computers I may have but if were going to do this believe would have to setup a Kvm virtual-machine guest for anything M$'ish. Still the times are clearly changing in many ways in regards Nix and M$.

You must be referring to Windows Subsystem for Linux aka WSL. It's steadily improving and BL may be soon able to run  within WSL.

a. But the cli stuff runs more or less perfectly? (b. bash/ffmpeg for example? c. And ffmpeg/x264 will saturate cpu perfectly?)

Yeah the WSL thing. Hey it's good stuff for people even if I don't use window$ much anymore. Still really interesting to see this type of effort by M$. smile

Yes a good way for people to test drive Linux from within Windows.

Interesting idea.

I have some people i know who may be wanting to switch to linux cause there windows boxes are failing them, they seem to think its the actual physical computer but in my experience it is just the operating system. Ill start another thread on this...

@DeepDayze ...

Just stumbled over mention of it and had to think, hey cool, good for M$. Personally when it comes to trying gnu/Linux, would say people do it the right way, of course in my opinion the right way is bare metal. Oh well ... however someone chooses to go about it.

On Windows with modern hardware virtual machines have gotten quite usable to try Linux in, they generally run Linux better than Windows as a guest OS, way better than when I first used Connectix Virtual PC under Win 95c (Before Microsoft bought them out and re branded to Microsoft Virtual PC). Bare metal is a tad extreme to try it out.

^ It's up to x-enduser. However someone wants to go about it. Ends up being their responsibility to do it in a manner which isn't techno-tarded. big_smile Get what you're saying though. Virtualization is amazing stuff too and can see the appeal of people dipping toes before jumping head first, shrugs. It's x-persons system(s) so their decision and responsibility. Hope they enjoy ! smile

Well x-enduser is typically cautions, a few are wayland though and dive right in, they're hard to console when their system breaks but I tty monkey

Re: What madness is this ?!?! Running gnu/Linux apps in Win10 ?

Although they have made little or nothing of it in the courts yet, Microsoft claims it has rights over certain parts of Linux. Maybe I am just a cynic but using WSL, to me, simply means strengthening their claims. I doubt I would use it. I am forced to use Suse Linux because some companies that I do work for use it as servers, and I am forced to use Windows 7 and 10 for the same reasons, plus the wife likes using windows at home as it's what she uses in the office, and I like playing computer games that cant be played under WINE. I just wondered if you guys see the MS claims as having any validity and whether WSL is some kind of cynical attempt by MS to start breathing its evil all over linux? I mean the more they invest and add to linux the more claim they get, right?

The telephone is an antiquity - you never know who is calling, there is no image, it is an outmoded product which constantly disrupts work (Ralf Hutter (Kraftwerk)) ps: my wife knows how much I dislike being disrupted at Work - Ralf Hutter hit the nail on the head there

With the proviso that unless I am a specialist property rights lawyer then my view isn't particularly valid either...

Oh actually forget my previous post. By coincidink I found this article from November last year where MS apparently dropped its claims over any part of the linux code

^Thanks!

I hate the American date syntax.
Like, 10.11.18 means 10th November 2018  or 11th October 2018  or 18th November 2010...?

i think it's month/day/year in the US of A, and they usually use slashes just like this.
seems to be many different ways of doing this around the globe.
when in doubt, do it as computers do - either use '%s' or '%Y-%m-%d'.

Re: What madness is this ?!?! Running gnu/Linux apps in Win10 ?

^Of course I'm not in doubt what to use myself - 190202 or 19-2-2 or 2019-2-2 or 2019/2/2 or even 2-2-2019 but something that has some logic to it. (In Japan it's Y/M/D) That wired page has 10.11.18 at the top which is seriously ambiguous to me.

Yes I know the most common US order is month/day/year but it just makes no sense at all. I once tried to point that out to a guy who was publishing an English-language news site here in Japan, but his reply was "the majority of our readers is American"! Backed up by other (American) readers on his Facebook group. At least now he's switched to writing the date in words which helps us readers from foreign lands.

Re: What madness is this ?!?! Running gnu/Linux apps in Win10 ?

Here is 'day month year', which I guess it's a bit better, still in computer sense 'year month day' makes the most sense (It will sort corectly). p.s. Also it is equivalent to clock definition 'hour minute second frame'.
