Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

I'd probably test http://vsido.org (fluxbox).

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

Antix used to have a preselectable Fluxbox option. LinuxBBQ is bound to have a Fluxbb roast.

Though any distro would do; just install fluxbox.

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

GParted Live (Fluxbox) comes to mind, but the only reason I keep that distro around (on a flash drive) is for partitioning.

VSIDO has been on hiatus for quite a while (health issues) so there will be a huge update to Debian Sid if the OP goes that route.

antiX (Debian Stable) would be the better choice for fluxbox.

Better yet, use apt and install fluxbox or blackbox on BL.

Blackbox project has been dormant for quite a while; doubt you'll find a distro with blackbox as the window manager. Both fluxbox and openbox started as forks of the last official release of blackbox. Openbox has moved on to be it's own wm since then.

You could always use the debian netinst iso and then roll your own blackbox or fluxbox build.

^ CROWZ?

Have you entered the wonderful world of releasing a distro? If so, I'll have to give it a test drive.

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

CROWZ looks good and like the dark theme which is easy on my old eyes...maybe I'll give it a spin in a VM.

You are welcome, and too bad there's no 32 bit version I can run on an old Thinkpad.

a little research goes a long way.
this search quickly brought me to this result (who would've thought, a fork is still under development!).

the original blackbox site seems down (or sourceforge killed it with one javascript too many), but y'all know how to use the web archive, yes?

look here:
Latest Release etc.
2005? hmmmm....

PS:
fluxbox:
there's a desktop environment that uses fluxbox as default. i forget the name, but i'm sure op can use some search skills to find it.

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

@ohnonot - interesting find; there are couple of forks of older window managers on that person's github page. Fork of icewm and echinus (renamed adwm).

adwm looks interesting.

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

^ 0-day appreciate you bringing the conversation forward regarding Blackbox, have a drive with BB installed with some configs, the .blackboxrc is almost identical to the init of .fluxbox and menu can be used with creating .blackbox in the home directory. Some interesting info is located here and here. Appears that most links that were there a year ago including official BB site are no longer.

Have found some FB styles work while others don't, something to play around with. For one wished BB was still in development, would make an interesting build!

Ozitraveller offers a DIY distro build for anyone who wishes create a personal distro, has been updated in the last few days and tested both by me and others that it works OOTB when adhering to the directions of the tutorial. JWM is the default Wm with the DIY, but can be customized by rebranding to whatever name you choose and configs for BB.

The DIY tar.gz can be found here along with the README which includes pertinent info and tutorial.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/linnix/?source

Thanks again!

cheers

Re: blackbox or fluxbox distro

Create it with this for BB...from ubuntu forum...here

IV. STARTUP

1. We make a startup script.
2. We change the path of exec blackbox in /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop

1. We create a script.
Code:
gedit ~/.bbstartup.sh
and paste this in
Code:
#!/bin/sh

gnome-settings-daemon &
conky &
exec /usr/local/bin/blackbox
then make it executable
Code:
chmod +x ~/.bbstartup.sh
2. We change the path of exec blackbox in /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop

first a backup.
Code:
sudo cp /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop_backup
then
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop
Before we change anything, It will look something like this...
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=BlackBox
Comment=Highly configurable and low resource X11 Window manager
Exec=/usr/local/bin/blackbox
Terminal=False
TryExec=/usr/local/bin/blackbox
Type=Application
then we change the Exec and TryExec to the path of the newly created script. Replacing bluevoodoo1 with your username.
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=BlackBox
Comment=Highly configurable and low resource X11 Window manager
Exec=/home/bluevoodoo1/.bbstartup.sh
Terminal=False
TryExec=/home/bluevoodoo1/.bbstartup.sh
Type=Application
Logout, and hopefully you'll be all set.

cheers
