Game portrait: Tales of Maj'Eyal, a FOSS roguelike round-based RPG

Portrait: Tales of Maj'Eyal (tome4)

After seeing this thread, I've been wanting to advertise tome4 a little bit more. Hence this post.

Homepage & Download: https://te4.org/

What type of game?

Tales of Maj’Eyal (ToME) is a free, open source roguelike RPG, featuring tactical turn-based combat and advanced character building.  Play as one of many unique races and classes in the lore-filled world of Eyal, exploring random dungeons, facing challenging battles, and developing characters with your own tailored mix of abilities and powers.  With a modern graphical and customisable interface, intuitive mouse control, streamlined mechanics and deep, challenging combat, Tales of Maj’Eyal offers engaging roguelike gameplay for the 21st century.

Gameplay

* The game is unforgiving towards mistakes in building your character (allocating points to useful class and generic talents, leveraging synergies between talents and equipment, adapting to changing enemy types and territory). You may win a game, but the emphasis is on winning the game with a specific character build, and you'll probably want to replay the game with the same or any other character in order to try to arrive at a better "solution" to the game.

* The degree of unforgivingness varies with the chosen difficulty. You can win without having a perfect character build on normal difficulty, though you probably won't on Nightmare and Insanity difficulties.

* You'll probably lose with your first couple of characters more or less early in the game. That's part of the fun; you'll get better. The tome default mode allows for up to 6 lifes per character; however there's a roguelike mode with only 1 life too.

* The only information you should probably read before playing or during your first early game is Recommended Zone Order Progression. Other aspects of the game are discoverable by carefully reading talent/item/class/race descriptions and in-game lore.

* Nevertheless, when building a specific class, there are tons of class guides on http://forums.te4.org which may provide helpful insight into strategies and possibilities of specific classes/races.

* High replay value due to unlockable classes and races, alternating zones, generated zones and side quests, additional difficulty levels.

* The base game is free and good for 100s of hours of gameplay, however extra content is available through DLCs which can be purchased by donating or buying the game on Steam and in other stores. Donator status unlocks (besides getting access to the major DLC) some other minor in-game features.

Other aspects

* Good to play on a tight time budget due to its turn-based nature; you can save and exit at practically any point.

* Fun character-building experience, who doesn't want a badass Shalore Temporal Warding with tons of buffs capable of dealing 1000s of area damage?

* Addictive. Challenging!

* High-quality soundtrack and nice graphics.

* Tons of high-quality community addons for even more features and content!

* Online character dumps and achievements (see my current signature).
