SuSE sold for $2.5B to private equity firm

This just in: SuSE (company and all its properties) got sold to a private equity firm (source). Be that as it may, private equity firms are not exactly known for being domain-specific experts in information technology…Hope this doesn't destroy the SuSE brand.

SUSE Linux is thrilled with the EQT partnership

Yeah sure.

Per aspera ad astra.

Good morning geekos,

This morning we all learned the news that the openSUSE projects main
sponsor, SUSE, currently owned by MicroFocus, intends to be acquired
by EQT Partners in Sweden.

https://www.suse.com/c/news/suse-partne … expansion/

Nils Brauckmann (CEO of SUSE) personally called me this morning to
assure me this news will have no negative impacts on openSUSE.

This will be the third acquisition of SUSE since the creation of
openSUSE, the second under the leadership of Nils and his team.
Just as happened in that case, SUSE will be making no changes in its
relationship between the company and the openSUSE Project.

SUSE remains committed to supporting the openSUSE community, who play
a key role in helping SUSEs success, which is expected to continue
under their new partnership with EQT.

If anyone has any questions, concerns, or feedback, please feel free
to discuss them on this list or email me directly.

Many thanks, and have a lot of fun!

Re: SuSE sold for $2.5B to private equity firm

considering how often SUSE changed ownership it doesn't really seem newsworthy - except for the sum paid maybe.

The previous owner was also a private equity firm as far as I can tell. The only major software project that doesn't belong to a company is surely Debian? Or perhaps the BSDs?

oh, there's a LOT more.

depends where you draw the line on "large".

archlinux: initial release 2002, 21 distrowatch-registered distros based on it (and a few more based on their package manager)...

True.
I wouldn't include Arch, TBH. Who uses it in any "serious" context?

Re: SuSE sold for $2.5B to private equity firm

"serious" = money is concerned
would do as a definition I guess.
Maybe add "lives" as in avionics, NASA, etc...
