Hi from johnraff

There's no way to prove it of course, till the real me logs in and confirms it - maybe early Jan - but this is johnraff struggling with a tiny touchscreen keyboard on my new smartphone.

Tuesday midday I slipped on a wooden floor in thick socks, and hit my hip. Hard. Hurt a lot. That evening discovered it was broken, and was sent straight to hospital. Dr. at emergencies said "operation tomorrow". (Now have 3 titanium screws in it.) Asked if this was a common case:"just did two today".

Anyway, glad to have Japan's health service on this. Op. seems to have gone well, and hope to be out in the first week in Jan. Cost should not be too much - touch wood.

Christmas in Japan's no big deal anyway. smile

Get well soon John, sounds like you are in good hands. Might need socks with some grips on the bottoms!

Home is a dangerous place. You'll be doing fine soon, John, just take it easy for a while in your nonslip slippers. (Is that a paradox or oxymoron?)

so you're a cyborg now, and prompty cloned yourself big_smile

anyhow, good luck and thank god for health insurance!

also nice to see that someone whose manly hands are used to handling a manly keyboard can actually get to grips with a girly and flimsy smartphone screen, and the forums.
(i'm not at all being sexist here angel)
have to try that myself one day; currently my online activities are well separated between home and mobile.

I'm sorry to read about it, good to hear though that the op went well. Something like that can happen to anyone, just a matter of a split second. I wish you a quick recovery!

^just what I was thinking!
Next up, find an easier to use keyboard. Pecking at these tiny letters is driving me crazy.

That was my experience too! Some years ago with no smart phones I always hated writing sms messages. Now some users tend to chat ALL the time on their mobile phones. Well, basically the whole younger generation nowdays - heads down, staring at a small screen, frickling with a way too small keyboard. But it works for them obviously. It never worked for me. Fortunately there are pretty good portable keyboards, you can even fold some of them.

Re: Hi from johnraff

I have short fat fingers so typing on phone keyboards is always an exercise in aggravation. I tend to just use predictive text, lol.

Re: Hi from johnraff

Tethering.
Today have laptop on hand.
Connect to phone via USB cable, enable usb tethering on phone, network manager on BL laptop detects new connection... that's it. cool
As a bonus, phone battery gets charged.

I was hoping my johnraff password would already be available in the laptop's firefox account, but that will have to wait till betterhalf brings in the notebook tomorrow. (I'm determined not to put anything mission-critical on the smartphone.)

Re: Hi from johnraff

Knocks wood, dang Raffsan ... missed this. Noticed you mentioning being on a touchscreen, thought maybe your comp had conked out or something similar. Sorry to hear about the injury and hope you rapidly recover John.

Which definitely feel your pain about that touchscreen thing ! Keep meaning to look and see what microusb keyboards(or adapters perhaps) or bluetooth boards would address it and how pricey they are. Also wonder how well polished any talk to text/type stuff is out there for Android. Don't use it but the "Ok google" thing seems to work well for folks I've seen, shrugs.

Those people with the bluetooth earphone things always tend to freak me out a bit, see someone walking around talking to themselves. Oh well ... I do that too and don't have a Bt ear-piece. However am usually fairly drunk at the time. big_smile

Get better John.

Re: Hi from johnraff

Derp ! Missed the part about the laptop above there. Of course had to google about the talk/text thing, actually results looked promising. Now that you've got a real keyboard under your fingers am sure that has to make you feel a bit better and hey, this talk/type deal could come in handy later hopefully. Of course main thing is the last thing in post above. Speedy recovery fellow nixer. smile

may i interest you in a password manager? keepassx for the desktop, keepassdroid for the phone?
i still wouldn't use my phone for money transactions, but for a forum it should be safe enough, no?

Re: Hi from johnraff

Using firefox's built-in password manager on the laptop. Just hadn't got round to adding BL's p/w to this recent install.

Certainly no intention of having anything money-related on the phone. As a  mod, I'd rather keep my regular BL p/w off it too.

Freedom at last!
Got out today. happy_bunny.gif

Still need a stick to hobble about for a while, but I should be back to Striding Purposefully in a couple of months apparently.

Many thanks for everyone's good wishes!
(You probably won't be hearing much from jr2 now.)

Good to hear it, be careful with that stick though. Wish you quick complete recovery. And it's good to read too that health care apparently does work in a proper way in some countries (unfortunately there are other examples...).

Re: Hi from johnraff

Thanks all!

Yes, very happy with the treatment I got - according to my web searching they did everything right.
All the doctors, and especially nurses, were super-sweet too (not just to this foreigner but to all the other cantakerous old gits on the same floor).

And the end cost won't be all that much - maybe total ~$1000 or so.
(Of course the Japanese health service is not running a profit...)
