Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

^If you're running firefox/iceweasel right-click "inspect element" somewhere on the page then open the "network" tab. Look for downloads of something.mp3, type mpeg. Click the different tabs on the web page and you should be able to figure out which mp3 files correspond to which streams. (There do seem to be 5.) Right-click the file to get the full url.

The popup didn't work for me (maybe because of noscript) and the "listen in your player" button only seems to get the "high" stream. However I've just found that site's got a HUGE archive collection, downloadable! Right now I'm listening to an excellent 90m "awesome tapes from Africa" programme. cool

Not all radio sites are this easy. Sometimes it's a long long search, bringing in the "http live headers" addon or opening up javascript files to look for a url list or something. Sometimes the audio is coming down an rtmp stream and can only be played with rtmpdump and then only if you manage to figure out all the parameters that need to be sent. Sometimes I just give up and open a browser instead. neutral

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

There is so much good stuff in this thread. I think it should be stickied.

For streaming I use Pithos and some custom stations. However now that this thread is here, it's opened up a lot new streaming avenues for me. So I am sure I will be using more than just Pithos in the future.

BTW. anyone using mpv to stream radio? I'd like to replace mplayer for mpv. I keep mplayer onboard just for this. No idea about how to do it with mpv (haven't made my homework on this either...)

I went for the simplest possible solution, a script (stolen and simplified from some place)
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bront … /bin/radio
example radiolist "database"
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bront … /radiolist

p.s. Alternatively one could also do a bunch of aliases, like

alias station1="mpv --load-unsafe-playlists http://voxsc1.somafm.com:8600 --no-video"

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

I just found this one yesterday but it appeals very much to a certain side of my musical tastes. At least, what I've heard so far has been slanted a bit back to the 60s & 70s but very much on the experimental side, lots of long tracks. Really good in fact.

EDIT: that was just what they were playing at that time. In fact WFMU look more interesting than that:

About WFMU wrote:

WFMU’s programming ranges from flat-out uncategorizable strangeness to rock and roll, experimental music, 78 RPM Records, jazz, psychedelia, hip-hop, electronica, hand-cranked wax cylinders, punk rock, gospel, exotica, R&B, radio improvisation, cooking instructions, classic radio airchecks, found sound, dopey call-in shows, interviews with obscure radio personalities and notable science-world luminaries, spoken word collages, Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtracks in languages other than English as well as Country and western music.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

I am using these.

DRadio Kultur (classical music and Feuilleton): http://dradio-ogg-dkultur-l.akacast.aka … _dkultur_l

BR Klassik (classical): http://br-mp3-br-klassik-m.akacast.akam … -klassik_m

AnimeNFO (JPop and OST): http://momori.animenfo.com:8000/

For the most part I avoid 'moderated radio' because I don't like people talking when I listen to music.

@twoion thanks for those.

What I like about music from a DJ on a radio channel is that you get to hear new things. A certain amount of talk I can take, and usually ignore.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

I used to have a subscription to Live365, but they closed shop due to increased costs to stream music.  In the past, I've also listened to Digitally Imported www.di.fm (mostly for trance music) and Sky.fm www.sky.fm.  However, neither site offered the breadth of genres offered on Live365.  I have Radionomy bookmarked, but still haven't made the time to see what it's like.  I've been thinking about checking it out though because I miss discovering new artists.

@twoion:  No talk and no commercials.   wink

Edit:  Checked out Radionomy yesterday; too many commercials.  New Age is one of my favorite genres and I didn't care for the music selection on a couple of their highest rated channels for that genre.  I so miss Live365... cry

Pithos, Spotify, and Streamtuner2 which utilizes audacious.

Always trying out something, these three are my primary sources for streaming music .

^that is a bummer! would think it would not be an issue in Japan.

Hopefully one day soon they will fix that problem!

Streamtuner2 is an excellent source of music too!

cheers

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

I loved Pandora when it first came out. They pulled the plug on us a year after, I think it was. Both they and Spotify have been promising to extend their service here "soon" but I'm not holding my breath.

Yes, Streamtuner2 is also nice. smile

^Listening to that right now and it's pretty nice so far. Some great Afrobeat earlier and a bit of Pop Sunda atm.

Thanks!

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

Right now (as in the last few weeks), I've been on a kick listening to the band Tool.

I have a playlist on youtube based on Schism. Nice work background music and if you pay attention their lyrics can get pretty deep.

Re: What do you listen to - Internet streaming a.k.a radio and such?

misko posted a tutorial on the VSIDO forum of a simple CLI internet radio program. Very impressed and just works. Easy and quick. Based on YAD, requires mpg123.
http://vsido.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=hr … g14855#new

This is a tutorial on a simplified version of hankerdefo's PMRP. Which allows for separate and easy access "stations" file in the home/user directory.

Worth taking for a spin!

Recently discovered a big community-maintained radio directory: http://www.radio-browser.info/gui/#/
Over 18,000 stations.
(Found via RadioDroid, an android radio app from f-droid, which uses this.)
