Debian 8.8 Incremental Point Release Incoming

Hey everyone, Saturday the 6th seems like it'll bring the update from 8.7 to 8.8 Jessie! The train to Stretch rolls on!

https://lists.debian.org/debian-stable- … 00000.html

Any of the fixes/patches stand out as affecting us downstream?

Nvidia and all other security fixes I'd call important. New vlc, I haven't looked at what's been done there.

ca-certificates I'd been waiting for - fixes an issue with installing the mscorefonts when building the isos. Now I can drop the patched .deb I was using. smile

So are the changes in Jessie 8.8 going to be applied in Deuterium?  Likewise are they already implemented in Stretch?  Wouldn't all of the updates to Jessie 8.8 have gone through Stretch already?

BL always tracks stable, you'll get the upgrades when you run them.

I'd imagine no to your second question. Stretch has new versions of a lot of packages. The updates for old versions go through Debian security and experimental, I think. Check the web and Debian mailing lists for more info, if nobody else adds anything.

Re: Debian 8.8 Incremental Point Release Incoming

For any particular package, point a browser at: https://packages.debian.org/<packagename> to see the versions available in the different Debian suites. (You can also use just a part of the name.) In some cases Jessie and Stretch come with the same version, but Stretch usually has a newer one. Open a particular link, eg for systemd in Stretch: https://packages.debian.org/stretch/systemd and click the "Debian Changelog" on the top right to see all the version changes up to that point.

As a rule, packages entering the testing branch must have been in unstable for at least 2-10 days, Debian advise sticking with the stable release if security is a priority for exactly this reason.

For more on testing policy, see https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting
