Linux Voice is Over?

Just seen that Linux Voice is being taken into Linux Magazine. Looks like there wasn't enough revenue to make it a commercial success.
See LV for the LV view and here for the Linux Magazine take.

Big shame, I liked it from issue 1.

Re: Linux Voice is Over?

Oh wow, you know, I listened to their podcast..and lately for the past 3 episode they've been very very sluggish with the new episodes. They used to be prompt and one time one every 3 weeks, but last episode wasn't out until a month and a week later.  Honestly the magazine was much better than the show anyway, The podcast was  very dull, long moments of dead air, awkward jokes, and they just didn't seem like they knew much about linux and technology really. (who am I to critisize) They seemed to me to fall into the same trap of all FLOSS advocates. Knee jerk reaction to anything that may suggest less rights or any sort of proprietary software.

Re: Linux Voice is Over?

A real bummer alright.

I am/was a paid-up magazine subscriber and loved the content. It was detailed, wide-ranging and a very interesting read. I hear they'll have a slot inside Linux Magazine...but it won't be the same.

A bad 12 months....first Linux Outlaws, now Linux Voice :-(

I liked Linux Outlaws too - especially at first. Later, while the shows got longer, they seemed to be running out of interesting things to talk about...

Totally this....and the guys knew that themselves....they repeatedly joked about the name "World Cup Outlaws". It had morphed into a general disucssion podcast where Linux (and even technology) was incidental!

Having said that, i tried listening to GNR a few times, but just can't get into it.

Re: Linux Voice is Over?

I think I listened one or two of the podcasts, and yeah that could work if cut-down to say 10 minutes (15 max). As far as the magazines, multiple problems, it is either:

a. libreoffice is cool
b. ubuntu is so great and mint as well
c. opensource is fine
d. Frank talks about docker
e. my stupid pi

which is imho irrelevant (and deceiving) for most users, also kinda boring.

p.s. It is not that I think that making a mag like that is easy, but seriously I like this lil forum (with 7-12 active threads) better than that every day.

Re: Linux Voice is Over?

Just listened to the latest episode of Linux voice podcast. The team seems pretty laid back about the whole process, and asure any subscribers that their subscriptions will be transparently rolled into a Linux Magazine subscription. Also the podcast will continue as normal....so I'm going to assume the Linux magazine will be a bit thicker in size? Hopefully not thicker in price. I already barely get a copy unless I really really enjoy the content that month and can use for later reference

Re: Linux Voice is Over?

I'm not overly impressed with Linux Magazine.  I'd go back to Linux Format in a penguin-flap if they offered it in PDF format.  Yes, I know they offer PDF in their archives, but it's not put together.  It's all in different pieces, or at least it was when I had the rag subscription.

There's around 3 or 4 linux mags that I usually flip through, they all sort of blur together. The only one that really sticks out is the ADMIN and security one, that's heavily focused on enterprise security (though it's also Microsoft/Unix/Linx)  The price of each magazine though is just such a put off when *usually* the information isn't anything exclusive or new...

@Horizon_Brave:  I have come across some good info in the mags, especially about apps.

Never heard of that one before. Thanks for the link.

no problem. It's a more serious, and more practical magazine. Covers not just *nix as well which I like.  Just damned expensive, so I only get issues that really interest me

@HB I see, thanks. I never heard of that one either, but it looks interesting, I'll have a look at it.
