I thought that was Schumacher's intent - an homage to the 60's TV show with some campy humor and over-the-top villains played by A-list stars.

^ But what's with all the eighties/early nineties neon visual/punk haircuts, bad action scenes production and the totally convoluted plot and cheesy dialog? It's really bad, even for camp. Almost all the one-liners are totally lame.

Schumacher tried and failed. All too common in Hollywood.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

As you know, one of my favorite films. Directed by Clint Eastwood, his first time as film director. Two men died filming this on The Eiger, north face, and one of them was the technical climbing advisor for the film. Clint has never talked about it since.

An amazing, early film score by John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars) as well. One of the most realistic climbing films (in terms of the climbing, not the plot) ever made...

Play Misty for Me was Clint Eastwood's directorial debut. Good movie, Jessica Walter was excellent as the antagonist.

I stand corrected, Yes, one of the best psychological thrillers from that era! This one's a cheap James Bond ripoff with climbing, so pretty much perfect. Spielberg must have watched this, there's a lot of Hemlock in Indiana Jones.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

BTW, I don't care what you have to do... purchase a VPN account and get it via torrent from Pirate Bay or just rent or buy the damn film. It's thoroughly entertaining.

https://www.target.com/p/the-eiger-sanc … roup=246-1

1998 is the year of the DVD remaster, the film is from 1975.

Actually, it's the third major film Eastwood directed, he did High Plains Drifter before this, the ultimate anti-hero. What a great film that is. I mean, this is the opening shot, those colors are intense...

Similar color scheme an hour and a half in...

Um, Not Safe For Life. Clint rapes a woman while a midget watches and everyone leaves happy. When I said "ultimate anti-hero", I meant it.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

John Wayne in McQ. Wayne criticized Eastwood for his antihero films, then ended up playing some of them himself. McQ is one, drugs, guns, one-liners, the whole shebang. Soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein. Between Bernstein and Lalo Schifrin, the sound of fifties, sixties, seventies, even eighties cinema and beyond was defined. The output between these two is staggering.

Bernstein. The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent Seven, The Comancheros, To Kill a Mockingbird, Birdman of Alcatraz, The Great Escape, The Sons of Katie Elder, True Grit, Big Jake, The Shootist, National Lampoon's Animal House, The Great Santini, Meatballs, Airplane!, The Blues Brothers, Heavy Metal, An American Werewolf in London, Stripes, Trading Places, Ghostbusters, Three Amigos!, Legal Eagles, My Left Foot, The Grifters, Cape Fear (the 90s remake), ...

Schifrin. Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, Coogan's Bluff, Kelly's Heroes, Dirty Harry, THX1138, Joe Kidd, Enter the Dragon, Magnum Force, The Four Musketeers, The Eagle Has Landed, The Amityville Horror, Brubaker, A Stranger is Watching, The Seduction, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool, Rush Hour, ..

Joe Kidd (1972), starring Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall and John Saxon. Directed by John Sturges, film score by Lalo Schifrin, cinematography by Bruce Surtees. Filmed in and around Inyo National Forest (Sierra Nevada and White Mountains, California).

Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), starring Shirley MacLaine and Clint Eastwood, directed by Din Siegal. Film score by Ennio Morricone, cinematography by Gabriel Figueroa, filmed in Mexico.

Riders Of Justice, or Retfærdighedens Ryttere in its native Danish.
Probably me favourite film of the few I've managed to watch in 2021 (even if its technically a 2020 release).
Lars Brygmann needed more lines though. He was hilarious.

Erin Brokovitch, 1990. Julia Roberts won an Oscar I think, but Albert Finney is one of the best actors ever. Anthony Hopkins, Nichol Williamson, Albert Finney.

I watched a half-finished Sundance movie, don't remember which year.
All artsy, kinda horror-like, yet funny, but neither the story nor the budget lasted to make a whole movie out of it. Blergh.

He's great in the Coen Brothers Millers Crossing which is almost my favourite film of theirs.

Speaking of, if you like them, check out The Ballad of Buster Scruggs I think on Netflix.  Great Coen Brothers western anthology film that is a funny, sad rumination on death.  Tom Waits has a great turn as a grumpy yet resourceful prospector.  Cast is amazing of course.

Re: BunsenLabs film thread

I'm weird about the Coen Brothers. Blood Simple is one of the best debut films ever, Big Lebowski is a genius comedy, Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing are excellent, I'm "meh" about Fargo and Raising Arizona and I absolutely hate Oh Brother, Where Art Though?

I'll give it a shot though.

Yeah, I like some of their output more than other parts..  Word of advice on Buster, if you don't like the first story (which is lighter and funnier) persevere, you might like the following ones.   The third story is really dark, if you don't like it persevere :-)   The film is also a homage to westerns generally although avoiding many tropes, or at least subverting them.   Fourth story (Tom Waits) is great, film is worth it for that alone IMO.  For me:

Great - Fargo (slightly overrated but still great), Blood Simple, Millers Crossing, Buster Scruggs, Big Lebowski, No Country

Good - Burn After Reading, Oh Brother, Man Who Wasn't There

Meh - Hudsucker, Serious Man, True Grit, Intolerable Cruelty, Raising Arizona, Ladykillers, Hail Caesar

Never seen Inside Llewyn Davis
