I'm listening to 'Nocturnal Sonata' right now. I've also heard '30Hz Dub Prelude' and 'Memories In My Pentagram', those two I've added to my latest radio show episode. This is really good dub.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

My best friend from high school (1981), Colin, died of a massive heart attack last month. His death has brought me back in contact with my other high school friends, including Jeff. We had a band back then called 'Mangled Elf', it was Jeff on guitar, Colin on bass, and me on electric fiddle, we also had a drummer and a lead guitarist. Anyway, Jeff sent me this 3 year old track that he never did anything with, this is my first-take overdub of it. Not great, but some great ideas IMO...

https://soundcloud.com/hhh-orb/born-in-a-vacuum-has1

It goes right into Brad Mehldau's track John Boy, and then more tracks of his. Those tracks are much, much better, but that's because he's maybe the best jazz composer and pianist alive today, while I'm doing a quick live one-take over a 3 chord jam without practicing, recorded on my shitty laptop.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

You're all sick of Eminence by The Who, I'm sure, it's a three-chord jam. i-vi-i-vi... V (minor 1, minor 6... major 5). Boring. I don't care, here they are in Paris in 2007. Old, bald, sweaty, half-deaf, busted hand using a capo Pete Townshend is the best...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU87294pVx8

I hope I got the spelling right, it's Townshend. The pianist I like is Mehldau. The silent h (hhh) gets confusing when you're at the keyboard.

Why the hell is h pronounced "aitch"?????

Re: What are you listening to right now?

We have a little game with my father :

I started to write about an album I like, describing my feeling while listening to the whole album.

Then he listens to it, find a connection with another album he likes and writes about it.

So far we have :

  - Rush - Roll the Bones
  - Led Zepp - III
  - Toto - Mindfield
  - Def Leppard - Hysteria
  - Ark - Ark
  - Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
  - Opeth - Pale Comunion
  - Yes - Going for the One
  - Ayreon - The Theory of Everything
  - The Who - Quadrophonia
  - Hidden Orchestra - Live at Attenborough Creative Center

Re: What are you listening to right now?

OK, I just posted The Who, and saying The Who Quadrophenia is like saying The Who Tommy.

Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane, Street In The City...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-ScKVsUVe8

My vote for the second best use of an orchestra or a string section with rock post-Beatles, after The Wall by Pink Floyd.

Hmm, no drums on that track. Not rock?

Other than that quibble, nice post!

I like Talk Talk's Colour of Spring, and think it's an objectively exceptional album, for its era, for everything.
So I'm interested in this part of the game.
I wish I could play games like this with my parents ... sad Their musical tastes are pretty much non-existent, and where they do exist they just couldn't be further from mine.

erm... 5 min into Ark I wonder how anybody ever could've made the connection to Colour of Spring...

Widespread Panic. You have to go about 12 minutes into this video before the music starts, but it is worth it.

It's just a name relation here
  - Ark - Ark ---> Talk Talk

The rules are not clearly defined and the hidden goal is to propose new and interesting records, pushing boundaries.

Ah, I see.
Opeth was nice enough though, I can see the relation there.

Dirty Side Down (2010) is excellent. The first title (St Ex) is a masterpiece.

@ovum , one of my favorites is And It Stoned Me. I enjoy most of their cuts, though. To me, they are like a southern version of The Grateful Dead.

Ennio Morricone

Wrote the music for more than 500 movies. Passed at the age of 91.
The iconic, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
You can warm up with a few of his top tracks and move on to this hour long tribute to some of his best film scores. So good.

Haven't found AISM  (the Van Morrison song?) yet, but the song you posted followed on to one nice track after another. Yes, kind of like a cross between the Dead and the Allmans. cool

i've seen the dead and the alman brothers, but not widespread.  i guess i missed that and phish, which, speaking of- their song "waste" is pretty good for a band I don't usually like that much.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

On my way to discover ABBA. Jesus I like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BZeAHqdwkQ

Sure I think this is funny as hell big_smile

And as sure as hell this guy was coming up to me
He said, "Who am I and who are you and who are we?
What's our situation, do we have some time for us?"
I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus
He said, "If you're going somewhere can I come along?"
I said, "Keep on rocking baby, till the night is gone"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kGhGCsngzg

Countless more, I'm gonna get me a full loseless audio collection of this.

So many lame disco songs, and so many absolute gems. Here's one, Money, Money, Money...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETxmCCsMoD0

And a better one, one of their best, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5ITHuz4flw

Wikipedia wrote:

Estimates of ABBA's total record sales are over 380 million, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. ABBA were the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. They had eight consecutive number-one albums in the UK. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin America, and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish. ABBA were honoured at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, when their hit "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the competition's history. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2015, their song "Dancing Queen" was inducted into the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall of Fame.

The vocals and keyboards are excellent, of course, but the bass playing is really great on both of those tracks.
