All slightly derivative, of course. Miles was ahead of the curve. Setting the curve, in fact...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

It's more dynamic than previous, and Driver experiments with vocals a lot more which I really liked. Few times his singing reminded me of Bjork and Jorn Lande, both of whom I love listening to. First CD (aka standard release) is so dense and layered with a nice addition of heavy synths, which makes it hard to decypher at times but it's rewarding in the end. My favorite songs after 5-6 listens are "Midnight Mystic Rise And Fall" and "The Something Opal". If you like his oddball composing style you are gonna love this I think.

Bonus CD "Purity" is a "rendition" of songs from CD1 by Wet Math (I have no idea who that person is), and a completely different animal. It sounds like a collection of experiments that vary in genre definitions and songs are more straight forward, almost a complete opposition to the intensity of the first disk. I'm getting some diverse and crazy good vibes from songs like "Oceanic Point of Inaccessibility" (I can't shake off the strong "presence" of Kevin Moore's Chroma Key style, which is of course a huge bonus point), playfulness of "Lies in Lapis" which to me sounds like what Tool should probably be like in 2019 (haven't listened to new Tool album yet, their sound is worn out in my mind at least in past 15 years). I find it a lot easier to get into the bonus disk than the first one, and I am sure you understand it's because Kayo Dot is not an easy listen.

As a total sidetrack, I'm hoping that Mia and her kid are okay and she will return to play violin with Kayo Dot some day.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Fits my mood today.

Bob Dylan - Masters of War

Come you masters of war
You that build the big guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks
You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly
Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain
You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you sit back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
While the young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud
You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins
How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do
Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good?
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could?
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul
And I hope that you die
And your death will come soon
I'll follow your casket
By the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Re: What are you listening to right now?

The first 10 minutes were hard to get through.
But then, absolutely amazing (actual I still have ~45% left to listen).
Grooves so rare you'll probably never get another chance to hear them. No track listing unfortunately.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Early to mid nineties. Digital was in, but every artist was recording a scratch track from an LP and mixing it into their CD because digital sounded too clean. CDs made boring music more boring. The grit made it better.

Example, ETBTG - Walking Wounded (1996)

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^ Nice.

On the other side of the coin, one of the cleanest recordings I've heard:

Album Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

If you only listen to one song on that album that shows the mix quality:

Ride Across the River

I'd have to go with the self titled first album as my favorite. Love Over Gold would be second for me, based entirely on the strength of this track. Telegraph Road

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Rome - One Lion's Roar
What a Song.

So go kneel and weep and join the herd
You know, a million sheep will be dispersed
By one lion's roar, by one lion's roar

Either step aside, for every god knows
Everything will crumble under his blows
You think yourselves weak
Pathetic and overrun
And that all you've bled for
Is coming undone

Or you go out there and bow to none
And cause a stir as if it were the last one
Curse them into hiding
These thieves who won't believe
The way we're riding

So go kneel and weep and join the herd
You know, a million sheep will be dispersed
By one lion's roar, by one lion's roar
One million, one million, ...
