The whole "Burnt Weeny Sandwich"

But the best material is represented by "Holiday in Berlin," a theme that would become central to the music of 200 Motels, and "The Little House I Used to Live In,"

"The Little House I Used to Live In" has a solo with 2 or 3 organ/keyboard and violin.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

^Indeed! This, to me, is around the point beyond which Zappa's music became uninteresting. "Weasels ripped my flesh" OK, but nothing after that...

As a big fan of his initial compositions I agree with your deadline "Weasels ripped my flesh"
last production of the early days.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

How to play the violin (Hilary Hahn plays Bruch)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDJ6Wbzgy3E

I had the pleasure of working with her and meeting her twice when I was a substitute violist with the Baltimore Symphony in the late nineties, she's from Baltimore. She is as pretty and sweet and passionate as she appears in this video, she can play the devil out of the fiddle, she is amazing.

So, lessons...

1) Body geometry... you can move around, and you have to move your hands and the attached wrists, elbows, arms and shoulders along with them, but keep your angles the same. Shoulders, relaxed. Wrists, fairly straight, some chords mangle that though. The bow stays parallel to the bridge always, you're arm is a piston. Bowing tip to frog (tip to hand) means elbow flat, elbow out, elbow in, slight flex in the inward wrist to send the piston back down, reverse, slight flex with the wrist out at the tip, repeat. Lock the elbow on your bow arm and you are a garage-band hobbyist.

2) She doesn't hold the fiddle so much as she paws it. My teacher, Eric Rosenblith, called it "bear paws". And pressing the strings was the wrong pedagogy, that implies pressure. It's the softest bear paw ever. You're not pressing the neck with your paw, you're releasing it, focus on the pressure needed to release it. Same with the bow arm, you aren't pressing into the strings, you are leaning into them with your bear paw. You're a slightly snobbish, grizzly fiddler.

3) The fiddle is a table growing from your neck. It works better flat. You can tilt it, but don't spill it, sweeping up notes is embarrassing,

I gotta say, I wish classical music wasn't dying so quickly in the States.

Brahms, she's young but older than she was here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYN6iyzLNJE

Holy crap, how long is the opening phrase of the third movement that she and the orchestra effortlessly spin out, 60 seconds? Sublime.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Hello? Jessie? OMG how ARE you?!?? Awesome! Yeah, I'm great, but can I call you back in a half hour? Yup, I'm playing tonight. Huh? Oh Paganini 24, both versions. You're breaking up, say again? Well, they're all hard but, yeah, they're one of the hardest! It's like I'm playing a Star Wars string quartet with Lucasfilm special effects, only it's just me and my violin. Yeah, I have to play the hardest stuff and then the most sensitive stuff immediately after, the composer was kind of a freak. OK, love you, call you when I'm done...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Bach Chaconne, 2 versions.

Hilary Hahn

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqA3qQMKueA

Hahn is very young here, and though beautiful, the interpretation gets bogged down by a slow tempo and slightly blurry phrasing.

Gidon Kremer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBJPVnJ8m-Y

Kremer is ungodly, the perfect perverted Bach vessel, easily digesting the piece and performing it with no lactose or gluten intolerance, the human machine freak, the ultimate artist.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

My god, when he starts that arpeggio section after that scale section, at about 4:36, and he starts pulling the bass notes longer than the other crazy chord arpeggio stuff, and it all stays in tempo? Until it finally breaks down into one verse of a Bach hymnal before the finale and coda? Yeah, that's the stuff. Give me another hit of that.

Two of the greatest. Menuhin, before his nerve issues and subsequent recovery, and Oistrack, who was Russin, and therefore a solid, unwavering, righteous Oistrack (he's my favorite classical violinist).

Re: What are you listening to right now?

All right, all right. I know. How about some fiddle that wasn't composed before 1973?

Fine, I thought you'd never ask. Frank Zappa, George Duke and Jean-Luc Ponty, live with Fifty Fifty in '73...
