Re: What are you watching right now?

OK, cherry picking scrots isn't fair, and I'm wrong. The new Dune is a fabulous piece of trash cinema!

I'm also surprised at the vocal soundtrack. Every review says half of it was inaudible, but in straight stereo it sounds great from my copy. The soundscape overall is superb, as good as any I've heard.

Re: What are you watching right now?

No, I'm right. It is a boring, flatly filmed, poorly written and barely acted piece of expensive crap. The David Lynch film is a way better boring, poorly written expensive piece of crap. I'll say it till I'm blue in the face.

Some color saturation, that's all I ask. That and Patrick Stewart head-diving at me under full shields...

That's good trash.

Woo, another nice K drama on Netflix: 그 남자의 기억법. Briddy gudd situational comedy in there.

Honorable mention goes to Polish crime production The Mire for being better than any low-end high-cost German TV drama production (a phrase that happens to refer to ALL German TV productions, it's all shit).

More recommended K drama by me:

Lost (인간실격) (2021) - This drew my attention because I saw the Japanese title of the series first, which is 人間失格, No Longer Human, and refers to the famous literary work of the same title by Osamu Dazai. Dark, and good variation on the No Longer Human theme.

My Name (마이 네임) (2021) - This one is on Netflix and heavily (?) advertised (at least to the folks among us who have been using N for only accessing K drama for a year). Gritty and brutal, reminds me of True Grit, the 2010 Spielberg movie.

Tell Me What You Saw (본 대로 말하라) (2020) - Serial murders in rural Korea.

Lawless Lawyer (무법 변호사) (2018) - Despite the soapy title (common theme within the genre) unexpectedly brutal noir crime/thriller show. As many K series, picks a few strong themes and explores them.

Also very nice, escalating quickly: High Class (하이클래스) (2021).

The new K drama "The Silent Sea" (고요의 바다) is on Netflix right now, internationally, I think. It has a few glaring defects in the story especially in the beginning / world-building such as (a) largely military trained space expedition not having militery discipline and not employing basic recon tactics or even chain of command within the mission, treating the infiltration of an abandoned possibly bio-hazarded and irradiated Lunar space station like a walk in the dark woods (b) brain-dead decision to infiltrate an abandoned bio-hazarded and maybe irradiated Lunar space station without any appropriate gear and (c) after finding a corpse which died in very suspicious and non-obvious ways right at the entrance handwaving the problem away and proceeding to walk on like on a stroll during late afternoon in Seoul. The remainder of the 8 episode series is however well done and cinematically enticing. Would rate 7/10.

We watched an excellent movie last night, I am Sam. I have never liked Sean Penn, but he was great in it, as were Michelle Pfeiffer and Laura Dern.

Re: What are you watching right now?

^ A very young Dakota fanning is in that, right? The film that launched her career. 2001, a superb film, IMO, though it bombed with critics and did poorly at the box office. Sean Penn was Oscar nominated for Best Actor in that but lost to Denzel Washington in Training Day, which is a film I'm glad to have watched but never want to see again. The other nominees were Russel Crowe for Gladiator, Will Smith for Ali and Tom Wilkinson for In the Bedroom (?).

Sean Penn is great and worth another look. Taps, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Falcon and the Snowman, Colors, Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking, Mystic River (arguably Clint Eastwood's best film as director, a must-watch). I especially like Gangster Squad from 2013. He's had a 40 year film career in spite of being briefly married to Madonna. Who marries Madonna? Sean Penn, that's who.

Re: What are you watching right now?

i am sam (2001). Casting Sean Penn as a person with mental disabilities is brilliant typecasting. Seven year old Dakota Fanning is outstanding. Michelle Pfeiffer is a compassionate Michelle Pfeiffer. The cinematography is exquisite. Cringe at points? Yes, it's an effective film.
