I once had a cable bike lock stolen. They left the bike!

Nah, it was a lightweight cheapo one, with probably a limited number of key patterns manufactured. I went around the bike shed until I found one that fitted my key ops

(I still feel a very slight pang of guilt 40 years later!)

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

@dolly:  In my case, no on all three counts.  The stolen bike and the one with the rear wheel that needs work are both what I refer to as "bottom-bracket box-store beater bikes" that happen to be 26" dual-susser MTBs; the one I'm currently riding is a 24" MTB with a traditional diamond frame and was even cheaper.  (These "sizes" refer to the tires' nominal diameter; I have no idea what the frame sizes are, but given their mass-market price point, I'm guessing "fits a 95th percentile male" for the 26" bikes and "fits an average tween-to-early-teen" for the 24".)

@damo:  I'm envious of the fact that you live in a place where bike sheds actually exist; the closest I come to seeing one is discussions regarding Parkinson's Law of Triviality.

I haven't come across "bike-shedding" - a very pertinent observation of organisations  hmm

In the UK the phrase "behind the bikeshed" means various illegal activities happening out-of-sight. It comes from schoolkids sneaking away to have a smoke or a grope big_smile

BTW the bikeshed was at the School of Engineering building at uni.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Thanks for the law of triviality, can not remember to have heard of it before. Might have though. Even when the bike is not of the highest standard it is very annoying when it goes awol with a little help from someone who not has learnt the difference between what is no can do and yes can do.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Here in Linuxville, I usually hear "bikeshedding" in discussions of forks like libav vs. ffmpeg.  If it weren't for that discussion, I wouldn't have even known bike sheds exist.

"Critical Mass" was also mentioned in that cycling forum thread; I had to do a little searching to figure out what that one meant.  Pretty cool concept IMHO.

The importance of bikesheds is an overwhelming relevation to me. It feels good though to have been enlightened about it.

Bikesheds are very common in Europe and elsewhere.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I heard about bikeshed colour and Parinson Law, for the first time, on the FreeBDS, a long long time ago smile smile
And as I got older, and got up in the hierarchy, and got invited to more and more meetings, I'm witnessing more and more the phenomenon ... you wouldn't believe it glasses glasses

And remotely related: Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson Timeless. Priceless. Couldn't resist putting the link  big_smile

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

After losing an hour to struggling through an ad-infested website on my Android slab, I decided to wipe the whole thing (as much as its firmware will allow anyway) and install the Adblock browser.  While I was at it, I went ahead and got apks for vuze and torrentex, with the intent to turn the darn thing into a dedicated Debian & BunsenLabs seedbox.  Also threw the Android version of Rockbox on there, because why not?

I haven't tried torrentex yet because vuze works quite well.  Seeding both BL rc1 images as I type this.

Thanks.  My "seed slab" has been sitting quietly in the corner for about 20 hours now.  I suppose most of the initial demand for the rc1 images has died down already, but it gets an occasional nibble.

I did fire up the Adblock browser just to test it out on the page that gave me heartburn with its ads.  Makes a huge difference; I highly recommend.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Been in a retro mood today. Thinking of taking my Powerbook 5300 out and dinking around with it. It's a fun little computer and classic MacOS was my favorite OS of all time. Heck my favorite computer of all time was my PowerMac 8500. I loved that machine.

^ I think you and I might be the only ones here who appreciated the classic MacOS; I first met it as System 6.0.7 on a used SE/30.  (Old World ROM FTW!)  System 7 felt bloated by comparison.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I first learned how to use a computer on Mac OS 8. Those were the days.

The servant lifted off a kind of ottoman a long peacock-blue drapery, rather of the nature of a domino, on the front of which was emblazoned a large golden sun, and which was splashed here and there with flaming stars and crescents. “You’re to be dressed as Thursday, sir,” said the valet somewhat affably.
