Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I read an article the other day that coffee is supposed to help against cirrhosis of the liver. Another great excuse to drink more coffee.  wink

Speaking of Apple, after dual-booting and running some 10 different Linux distros on my aging iMac during the past 6 years, I've decided to return my aging iMac to OS X only. This decision is the result recent system crashes while running Linux and an increasing difficulty in installing and dual-booting Linux on the iMac. I even went to so far to wipe and reformat the drive, but when I tried to reinstall and update OS X from an earlier version, the update failed. Since I had no recent version of OS X on a DVD or USB stick, I was forced to take the machine to a shop and have them do a clean install. The Mrs. forbade me from installing just Linux on the machine. She looked at me askance when I told her that OS X is based on Free BSD and consequently is also a "nix" distro, so it wouldn't be a big deal if I ran just Linux on the iMac. monkey

Meanwhile, I'm kind of wishing and hoping that the HDD dies in a year or two so I can buy a new desktop PC from ZaReason and run just Linux on it as I do my laptop.  devil

I've got a cold and an appointment with my tattoo artist tomorrow. Might as well just quit life at this moment.

^ Is this one of those "charge you if you don't give 24 hours cancellation notice" sort of things?  If I were into skin ink, I'd probably just take the usual cold meds and go.  Maybe take a little extra dextro (just to make sure a cough doesn't screw up the art; certainly not advocating recreational drug use wink ).

It's not the coughing and sneezing that worries me, it's the 'my body is already weak and I am a whimp who hates pain'. big_smile I could technically cancel, even though he asks for four days advance, but I've already missed out too many sessions because of sickness, so .. gonna' stick through it!

Funny thing is: They actually do. If there is anything you don't like that can be fixed (wrong shading, color that wasn't correctly applied) they do it free of charge. Same goes for refreshing works after some years. And if 'OH GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE' is the case they provide you with good contacts to removal experts. (Which there is no way in hell you could get me to do. Tattoo removal is .. just no. Hell-level painful.)

i know that sesnsitivity to pain is much higher when i have a cold; i can relate to that!
but the way you generalize it: i'm a whimp who hates pain - isn't that part of the experience? or so i'm being told. of course, others probably favor the purely artistic point of view.

The pain is definitely part of the experience. However there is only so much I can take without screaming inside. But turned out I was just nervous anyway. Wasn't that bad.

You can learn to withstand pain to a certain degree, but of course, it doesn't help much once you cross that pain threshold.  hmm

I learned an incredible lot about my body in the process. And I learned that there is no point in trying to 'get through'. You'll only end up cramping all the time and your body will give up very soon. Ignoring the pain works well, especially in the beginning. After some time, your best bet are breathing techniques. It's amazing how much you can control yourself just by focusing on breathing correctly!

but hey, i'm not opposed to tattooing.
ntw, does your previous post imply that the pain of windows 10 is worse than the pain of tattooing (with or without a cold)?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Except that my visists to the dentist have been, with one exception, painless in the last 25 years. Hail luck with genetics! monkey

My previous post is the only reaction I could come up with to the idea of displaying intrusive ads on people's computers. I mean, .. what kind of (potentially potent, psychedelic) plant do you have to smoke in which amounts to come to the conclusion that this is a good idea and won't cause anger, maybe even outrage?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic … 105#p20105

So there's this whole "rm -rf / as root" thing that most of us have heard about, and an argument that a script calling for "rm -rf $directory/" might have a bug and fail to set $directory, thus accidentally your whole disk (and possibly your mobo on certain UEFI systems).  I was always of the opinion that such a bug would never escape into the wild, but I see that it can actually happen.  Johnraff already got it patched though.

BunsenLabs is safe from that one unless users have converted to UEFI booting.

Those who have may wish to add this line to /etc/fstab to mount /sys/firmware/efi/efivars read-only and prevent the possibility of bricking the motherboard:

efivarfs /sys/firmware/efi/efivars efivarfs ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime 0 0

Note that this may prevent kernel & GRUB updates, if it does remount the files rw before upgrading:

sudo mount -o remount,rw /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

Then back to ro afterwards with:

sudo mount -o remount /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

does anybody know how to make dmenu act normally in regards to completions (like gmrun)?
I can't even understand what criteria it uses to complete. It's like it just completes to whatever it "wants". I'd like for it to work more like a terminal: when pressing tab, it lists the possibilities, but only completes if there's only one possible match.
hmm
