I have lived around here for many years and I'm sure it's fairly new.
I left the street lamp in the picture to show that this thing is not a street lamp, and also how tall it is.
What could it be?

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

It looks a lot like one of those distribution transformers (use your search-fu), but those are usually attached to a utility pole of some sort, not standalone like in your photo, so...

If it's new then my best guess would probably be 5G cellular related. The equipment is supposed to be significantly smaller than 4G. Maybe not a transmitting tower but a signal relay point of some sort. Then again, it might just be a public wifi hotspot for all we know.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Any enclosure/box at or near the bottom of the pole? This could be buried in the ground.

Throw a pebble at it. If it goes ping it is likely metal.

5G note: Size depends on frequency band and 5G is done for all frequencies. High frequency = small antenna. Low frequency = big antenna. A lot of what makes 5G different from 4G happens behind the scenes and has nothing to do with the antenna or even radio. Reduced latency is one such thing.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

  • It didn't emit any sounds I noticed

  • I'm fairly sure the top is a kind of barrel with metal sheeting, one can see it's hollow and there's small holes at the bottom

  • the area is too residential for it to be a public wifi hotspot imo

  • there's nothing at the base but it stands pretty close to one of those grey street electric panel cabinets. No obvious connection though (probably underground)

I thought so too but it doesn't jibe at all with the pictures here ... sad

Could be anything really.

^^^

5G also seems to be a possibility to be sure. Bunch-of-poles

5G is implied, So maybe a relay of some sort?  The 5g tower where I live looks nothing like that, and it is much taller with a full array spanning several feet (6-8).

Whoops, Here we go: https://www.wfae.org/podcast/faq-city/2 … -charlotte

5G is implied, but there is no article I could see. So maybe a relay of some sort?  The 5g towers here look nothing like that, and are much much taller.

It's sometimes referred to as stress furniture. Note the enclosure at the base of one of the poles. That was what I was asking for although I had anticipated something less boxy.

There are even versions that look like man hole covers with no pole. In Switzerland I think.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Think I got it.

https://www.wfae.org/podcast/faq-city/2 … -charlotte

From the article:

So, back to our black power pole here. It's about two stories tall — a single black metal pole with a black box on top. These poles are different from the tall towers you see elsewhere, that hold the current generation of wireless equipment, known as 4G.

Several companies have sought city permission to install 5G equipment, Smith said.

“The main folks that are deploying at the moment are Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Sprint and T-Mobile are a little active, but less so,” he said.

And then there are independent companies that build poles and towers on behalf of wireless phone companies. But Smith said that's changing with 5G. For one thing, these are smaller than traditional mobile phone towers, and in some cases closer together. Smith said now the big wireless carriers seem to favor building and owning their own poles.

In any event, they look the same overall.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

My father-in-law had a good friend who became wealthy because he happened to own a strategically located tall hill. The telecomm companies leased the apex for a big 4G tower. They tried many times to buy his property, but he wouldn't sell. They continued leasing it, and I assume they still do.

Not as bad as not refreshing during a long, technical post and having the site timeout on you. Am I right? Note to self, write it up in a text file first.

I was posting my Unified Field Theory (Theory Of Everything) from memory just now but the site timed out and I've already forgotten it as I wasn't that interested.

Not exactly, and they probably don't even have to be black, but I guess my initial hunch was correct.
If anything then because of timing; 5G is being rolled out, lots of talk about the new technology with lower radius, so new technology starts popping up everywhere.
I wonder why I haven't seen more of them yet...

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I have an unimportant Firefox question. I only just noticed (or it only just got added), that when I click in the address/search bar in Firefox, without typing anything the first result displayed is Amazon - sponsored

I never visit the Amazon website so it's nothing to do with my history. Does anyone else see this behaviour? And is it new?

No.
If I open a new tab and click in the address/search box I get a list of what I have in "Top Sites" below.
I get the same result if I do the same in an already existing tab.

Of course, you didn't actually kill yourself.

Not exactly dead, but I had been using Ubuntu for about four years, so as good as. Mind you, a single install, upgraded it between three LTS versions, with almost no breakage. Got a new computer, so I put Arch plus (gulp) stock Gnome on it. I will stick around this time, promise! But I'm really glad to see that BunsenLabs still going strong.

@johnraff - brother, I would love to post something in the LVM thread, but I have completely forgotten my LVM-fu. I had Arch installed with btrfs subvolumes back in 2015, then I moved to Ubuntu and accepted the default LVM partitioning scheme. When I bought the NUC that I am writing this on, I thought I would debianize the old machine and give it to a neighbor, but it would not install because a VG and PV were in use. It took me about an hour and a half to remember that I had to lvchange -ay before I could do anything. I'm running a single partition btrfs now, but I am getting an itch to reinstall with subvolumes, so if that particular bug persists, I might mess around with installing bunsen that way and do a new tutorial.
