Well the developer of Xscreensaver  does not make compromises of looks vs security.

I know exactly what that article is about. I understood it since the first time he wrote about it some 10 years ago. But thanks for the summary anyhow.

He isn't wrong, but he has proven time and again that he's incredibly arrogant, to the point of making false claims, or destroying the good his software does. He indirectly forced some distro maintainers to remove Xscreensaver from their repos, because they didn't want to confront their users with a "Your system is outdated" dialog.
That's how arrogant he is - because while he made a good point back then, too, I'm sure that could have been handled much better.
...on both sides I guess - he doesn't have the monopoly on arrogance or screenlocking.

So: it is very well possible to lock your screen safely without Xscreensaver. That's all I'm saying.

Don't mention it, I'm happy to bother you. :-D

I remember through fog about some night club owner that coded a "your system is outdated" message in a program. Didn't realize it was him.

Good for you. KDE is too heavy.

People, these days the masks are everywhere.
In the parks, by the road, on the streets, in the flee market,
on the floors of the waiting rooms, everywhere!
What is inside the minds of these people is a mystery to me.
Why is it so hard to pick up a mask if it accidentally falls of?
It's not excluded that some many of them throw the masks right after
they exit the premises where it is required to wear.

Yes i see them everywhere here in germany too. It´s disgusting and what comes to my mind is what´s inside. This should be Sondermüll (hazardous waste).

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

You do realize the entire ocean is infested with micro-plastics, right? And that the polar regions are receding at a staggering rate? And that chemicals and raw sewage continue to be dumped into waterways by corporations? And that nothing major is being done?

Mask trash, pfft. Look at recycling in general, which has been heavily promoted but hasn't worked. Something like 80% worldwide doesn't get recycled. Even pre-China sending trash back to the US thanks to the Trump tariffs, it's not a spectacular result...

https://www.planetaid.org/blog/recyclin … -the-world

4.4 lbs of trash per American per day, in 2015. Almost exactly 2 kilos. For every person in America. Not counting China, India, Russia, Brazil...

-edit- Pro tip: If an American can convert pounds and ounces to kilos and grams in his head, it's because he's used illegal drugs. (1 kilo = ~2.2 pounds, 1 ounce = ~28 grams)

Disclaimer: Allegedly.

Thanks hhh. Without the conversion from the archaic measures I wound not know how much waste the people make.
16 oranges and a kiwi is a lot of dump every day. ?
A lot of giga pounds per day.
But don't worry, after Covid-23 and WW3 it will be much less than that.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Rant but not only:

Germany's government staffed with spineless malicious partisan idiots including and especially comprised of our dear chancellor Mrs Merkel who commands a creativity in policy making akin to reading from and piping to /dev/null have decided to implement upload filters for user generated content on the internet, forcing content hosters to "comply" with regulations that are internet-destroying. For example, submitted and uploaded content including text now should be scanned for rights-infringing material, text quotes protected by copyright must now only be a maximum of n characters long, and of course posting links to possibly copyright-infringing material without remuneration is a boo-boo thing now.

Per se, BunsenLabs is not an entity that hosts and distributes content for financial gain, and the new regulation will only be attacking platforms such as youtube and search engines as part of its first-order effects (fellow Germans, get used to 90% of youtube being "content not available in your jurisdiction", and better get used to using VPNs), but because we are accepting donations, and are hosting a forum, I will take action to move hosting of all user-facing BL services, with the forum going first, out of Germany. We owe to Hetzner hosting a pretty good damn deal on value for price in terms of cost, but I will not host "user generated content" out of Germany any longer, with my name being on the invoice.

Just as there are malicious rogue lawyers who have been sending fines to German website owners who neglect putting their real name and home address (!) on their websites, there is bound to be legal arisk around hosting anything in Germany...no reason to incur this kind of risk.

Way to go out of your way in killing the old internet. Stupid pricks.

Source (look how careful I am to not break stupid laws by not quoting copyrighted content, instead I'm smart and just put this dumb link to the original publisher's website here): https://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/upl … 680098370a

Well, expect upcoming changes to BL infrastructure.

Nice blocking.

Ironically, SPIEGEL is a print outlet of Axel Springer Media, one of the entities which lobbied for this kind of regulation.

Der Spiegel is asking for my firstborn, so didn't read.
Is this related to that Article 17 of the EU Copyright Directive, or is it some domestic German thing?

Edit:
Since you mentioned VPNs, this post was initially blocked by whatever spamfilters you employ. I had to switch to another country's IP range. First time that's happened. I double-checked to make sure the IP that was blocked wasn't on any spam list.

Owed to Article 17 and a good deal of local lobbying to "improve" and "adapt" that directive to the German "market" (or what will be left of it).

Just accept the cookie, then delete it when you're finished. Firefox allows a default setting of keeping cookies only for the current session, ie delete them when you close the browser. Works pretty well and websites are happy.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

It has come to my attention that most people don't know what the fascism is.
You look at government taking control of the corporations to identify fascism.
On contrary, it is just the opposite.
The structure of a corporatist (fascist) form of government is a combination of government and corporations.
Fascism is dependent on the merger of corporations with the state. That is the concept of fascism.
"Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power." - Benito Mussolini

When the merger happens in modern times you get digital surveillance,
copyright and other sets of laws that are limiting the privacy,
freedoms of expression, creativity and critical response.
Sure there are elections but they mean nothing in such a system.
It can only get worse.
Fascism happened in Italy before WW2, but the lesson is forgotten and the history is repeating.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ Again, Chris Hedges...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP5gjrh-3Ew

Correctly, he correlates the current (decades-long in the making) US and world decline to the fall of ancient Rome after Augustus, not to Germany and Italy during WWII. "Inverted totalitarianism". From 2017, he predicts the next 3 years pretty damn accurately.

Except for Mike Pence ending up circumventing Trump to end the Jan. 6th coupe attempt. "Hang Mike Pence!" chants probably got his ass in gear a bit, eh?

-edit- ... and so neo-liberalism went in and destroyed, in the name of the 'Free Market', which everyone confused with freedom, all of those institutions...

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^Great interview, and for sure quote that needs to be remembered.

Miško and I know how the "free market" entered Serbia or shall we say "Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" which was in 1991 torn down and reduced to "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" (Serbia and Montenegro) which in 2006 split to their only member states. Another "official" division happened when "Kosovo" proclaimed independece from Serbia in 2008 all with generous support of Bjork and similar "brave" speakers of global corporate hierarchies (Björk speaks out about Kosovo independence).

Oligarchies that Hedges mentioned appeared in Serbia as well in post-Milošević era (after 2000) with the process of selling the government property for cheap money to offshore companies owned by the same people in the top echalons of domestic population. We saw the same nationalist rhetoric and all the flavors of lies trying to mask the cold fact that almost nothing has left for the common folk to hold on to be able to call it civil society. This is currently cleptocracy, as Hedges mentoned - mix of incompetence and greed, and it is very dangerous combination that breeds selective application of law and brutal mafia-like market practices.

Just want to point out that Firefox 85 partitions network connections and caches by website/domain without needing help from extensions now, which (supposedly) reduces the effectiveness of cross-site tracking by super/ever/zombie/cockroach-cookies. So you don't have to close the browsing session, just the tab. Not sure about Chrome since I'm not an exhibitionist/flasher.
