Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

^ I can relate. Camped out for almost a year waiting for my senior housing to come through. 100°F in the summer, 30°F in the winter. Saving up $$ for deposits, furniture, cookware, etc.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I did enjoy my time off the grid. Hide the bike, hike a bit, apply bug-spray, light a fire. Cook over a fire while drinking a beer. Stare at the sky. Stare at the fire. Sleep in a tent.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I've spent 4 year's worth of nights in tents. That's a price I paid to go to remote interesting places. But I would have stayed in a cabin if there was one there!

Hey a cabin is far better than sleeping in my truck like I did all those years ago.

In fact I did stay in an off grid cabin on Stuart Lake 2007-2008 with no electricity or plumbing. It was a paid gig though. I was care-taking an old fishing lodge that had not been used in years. Really run down place.

I had to wait until winter froze the lake hard enough to put the batteries for solar power in a sled to get them out to the island. Once I got that working I giggled like Homer Simpson while flicking the lights off and on. "Light goes on, light goes off. Tee hee".

I've got photos someplace. Can't find them at the moment. Maybe on an old hard drive I have stashed away.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Does living in a campervan count? In that case I could top you all: 5 years big_smile
All year round. No additional accomodation (my official place of residence was at my mothers).
It was by choice though.
Saw lots of Central, Northern & Eastern Europe during that time.

BTW, there's something magical about (camp)fires, sitting by one, staring into it. Some people say TV was invented to replace that. You have to try it to understand the reasoning.

I have a theory that the TV remote control is the equivalent of the campfire fire-poker stick. There is always someone who takes charge of that operation, while others gather round and watch.

I laughed hard at this. big_smile

I'm intrigued by your theory of a donut-shaped Universe and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

BTW, I'm the fire poker, of course. And the fireworks lighter. I relinquish the remote amongst friends so they can watch Tiger King or Ru Paul's Drag Race or some other crap. Otherwise it would just be Blade Runner Final Cut on infinite repeat.

Donut shaped universe? Why not. smile
We see the universe only how it is projected to the filaments of our minds.

Actually, Tv was invented to fulfill the vision of the scientists to send sound and motion pictures around the world.
It's the people at the top (elites) that addopted the concept into a mass control system.

This society is elitist. Less than 1% has more than 90% of the resources.
And 90% of humanity is surviving. Trying to put two ends together - from salary to salary.
Those who had the campfire stick got much bigger and more sophisticated.
The small remote control does not even give you the power to control your life.
It is there to maintain an illusion of free choice.
You can choose the content that was created to keep the elites to the top of the human pyramid.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products

That's 25% of staff (including some senior staff engineers from Firefox) while MozCorp CEO continues to take home $2.5M (100% increase since 2015) anually.

I would gladly pay a monthly $1 subscription or so (easy couple million a year I suppose?) to Firefox in order to ensure further focus and development but looking at Mozilla (the foundation and the corporation) today I'm very unsure where any money would end up.

If Firefox went away, we'd be stuck with a single web engine, that is WebKit/Blink, controlled by MAG (Microsoft, Apple, Google) at its core (and Dillo, which I hear is embeddable as well (embedded Gecko only exists on Android today)). There's not much solace in knowing that WebKit emerged from KDE's KHTML (probably one of the most successful FOSS projects to date).

There is no competition between bugs. When you combine two awesome bugs, you get a totally awesome bug.

Palemoon is a very outdated version of FF.
Gecko was forked to Gonna before multi-processing was implemented.
Would be fine if someone continued developing Iceweasel in case Mozilla drops the fox.
Parrabola hackers are still unbranding it. https://git.parabola.nu/abslibre.git/lo … /iceweasel

So, business as usual. Any idea what the figures for Chromium are?

Yes, by chromium.org. Founded by Google as its opensource counterpart. There is now three other companies active in developing the chromium code: Microsoft, Igalia, Yandex (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_(web_browser) )

Chromium is a stripped down version of Chrome, developed by by that evil corporation whose name rhymes with flugel.
