It also seems that it's enough to issue that command once, maybe it's written to some sort of SRAM.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Spending a couple of weeks reading forums/reviews/wikis/reddit and borrowing/testing various models has led me to the conclusion that all "ultrabooks" suck!!

The fanless ones all throttle massively under the slightest sniff of load. The more performant fanned models aren't that much better, only throttling a bit later.

Worse yet, all these manufacturer "all day" battery life claims are obviously achieved by making the screen dimmer than a nationwide blackout while standing in front of laptop performing an asinine lululemon pose. The moment you put them through any miniscule level of grunt tasking - I'm not even talking compiling or bloated Java/Electron crap, just regular KVM sessions or browsing - you're divebombed to 3-4 hours of use at best. Maybe I've been spoiled by iPads, but seriously, I expected better advancement in laptop thermals and power consumption.

Also, none of these laptops can even be used on your lap anymore - fanless ones try to make some fried scrotum delicacy thanks to the heat-pipe and aluminum underneath, and the fanned models all haven intake vents underside, sucking up lint from your shorts and clogging themselves eventually (while also trying to boil your privates).

The dedicated Linux vendors are severely overpriced, selling simple rebadged Clevo (who has shown no intention of joining the LVFS, ffs) variants at premium prices. The "community favourite" Dell XPS and ThinkPad Carbons overpromise in their capability and are also overpriced (especially with upgrades), and neither seem to be able to allow users to disable the IME. That Purism thing is even more overpriced. Apple has shitty unreliable butterly keyboards now. The cheaper Asus, Acer, Trumpwei, etc variants all have some component (usually wireless chipset) that spoils the whole party.

At this rate, I'll probably end up with an overweight T480 + 72wh bulge battery to even get anywhere near useable battery life. Either that or I get a NUC and find a way to RDP or VNC to it with an iPad or something, but then I still wouldn't have a headphone jack.

TL;DR = Aaaaaarrrrrggghhhh!!!

[/rant]

Sorry, I needed to vent somewhere.

Every now and then I envision life without a smartphone - a small laptop (I guess that's an ultrabook) plays an important role in these visions.
I need a real operating system, obviously, and to be able to listen to podcasts and music (mostly streamed directly, but not all) and good video playback capabilities (HEVC...) - and a good screen that remains usable in outdoor daylight.

Check out Preview. It doesn't have the extension support of other Firefox browsers yet, of course, but what it has OOTB is great. It incorporates many Focus features and principles, and it is very fast.

The laptops I personally tested? First was the XPS. It wasn't the Ubuntu "developer edition", but had identical hardware. Last year's model - the one with the webcam placed to film your nostrils. A lot I could write about, but I didn't like the keyboard, so let's end it there.

Then came a Thinkpad X1 Carbon. Great keyboard (by modern laptop standards), nice 1440p matte screen, and the only laptop I tested that passed the 7hr mark on battery with my workload (the Dell barely got 5), though that was after a bunch of tweaks (tlp, powertop, some script to fix a throttling issue), but still not perfect. Waking from sleep killed the trackpoint left-click button each time. Pretty sure there's a fix, but I didn't have enough time.

Then was a laptop from a boutique manufacturer called Venom. Nice keyboard too. Ergonomically sound, fanless, but I didn't get to install Linux on it (with XPS and X1 I installed Manjaro Gnome). It throttles a bit too much and the bottom gets toasty on Win10, and the owner says he's never gotten anywhere near the claimed 10hr battery life for regular MS Office use. Pretty looking, though pricey.

After that came an Asus Zen something something, but since that one had vulgarisms like "Broadcom" and "Radeon" in the specs, I just FTS'd and didn't bother.

I did try taking a chance midway through all this testing and had an acquaintance in the US order this for me since he would be coming back here soon - because US prices include shipping and taxes while ROW me doesn't - but the muppets weren't honest with their delivery estimates. Checkout page said 2-3 days and it still hadn't arrived 9 days later on the day of his flight, so canceled the order. Lost faith in them, though I must admit I like how their laptop looks. It's the only Linux laptop I've found that isn't based on a f'kin Clevo.

I starting to suspect that having headphones plugged in has a bigger impact on a laptop's battery life than I initially thought hmm

What are your needs, what's your budget?

I don't mind paying for quality. I just feel that the money some of these laptops go for doesn't give me the quality I expect. Take the cost of the last laptop I linked above. $850 isn't small money by any means, but the equivalent spec'd XPS (cpu, ram, screen res) costs roughly USD250-300 (rough conversion) more here, and the X1c commands around USD400 more, and the only benefits I get are Thunderbolt 3 (which I don't need) and a marginally bigger internal battery. Neither allow for disabling the IME or have the frequency of LVFS/fwupd updates for their BIOS, EC or SSD controller that the cheaper linked laptop promises.

Every now and then I envision life without a smartphone - a small laptop (I guess that's an ultrabook) plays an important role in these visions.

I've envisioned similar alternate realities, but it changes every day. I'm fickle and shallow. A fashionista. Maybe I need therapy. Probably should tweak some terminal colours or vim configs before I suffer a breakdown...

Ultrabook is such a stupid term. Can you battle giant monsters? No? Then don't go putting "ultra" in your name!!

Dell XPS 13 - but even that model has seen various incarnations by now, at least this article is 3 years old. Anyhow, I don't think a new (even last year's) "enterprise" laptop is within my budget.

A lot I could write about, but I didn't like the keyboard, so let's end it there.

How so? Too many typos?
I hear that complaint a lot (not specifically about the Dell XPS).
Seriously, I'm trying to undestand. The only time I currently use a laptop is a clunky 2012 HP in my workplace. I guess I don't type that much on that one, but there's nothing to complain about.

Then came a Thinkpad X1 Carbon.

There's different models over the years, but I guess you are buying new.
Are they all 14"? That's a bit large for me I think.
I still have my old minilaptop's sleeve and use that for measurement - anything that is significantly larger than that is out. That's roughly 25x20cm.

US order this

That looks pretty nice. Sorry it didn't work out. I consider delays in shipping normal and partially outside the sellers power. Of course they shouldn't make wrong promises.

that isn't based on a f'kin Clevo.

Are Clevos bad?

All in all, your budget is significantly larger than mine.
But some of the models mentioned, earlier incarnations, used, could well be realistic for me.
I was looking at it a few months back; unfortunately, as soon as it says Dell or Thinkpad on the label, prices go up, up, up. It's unreal. So I'm looking for good reviews for other brands, too. This site has been invaluable.

Ultrabook is such a stupid term. Can you battle giant monsters? No? Then don't go putting "ultra" in your name!!

How about minilaptop. Minibook.

Version I tested was purchased (according to owner) early 2018, fwiw.

I suppose it's a mental thing. If it's issued for work or a cheap $300 laptop, I'll get used to it eventually. Humans adapt, after all. But if it's a laptop I'm paying a premium for, my expectations rise. In the case of this XPS, the attack-decay balance/ratio wasn't within my tolerances for keys on a supposedly premium laptop. The "bounceback" rate after I hit a key was too slow. In audio terms, it's like having bass that kicks hard but leaves a trail of distortion and bloom behind, like those Beats by Cook headphones... and yes, typos were frequent. Not speaking for all Dells. Just this one I tried.

ohnonot wrote:

It was the 6th Gen, purchased earlier this year. Owner managed to bloat it up with crap. I borrowed it for 3 days, spent the first two mucking about on Manjaro, before going through the hell that is a fresh Windows 10 install on day 3 before returning it. Actually, the installation wasn't too bad, but getting the ThinkPad-specific blobs and a "Windows feature update XXXX" were a bit of a nightmare.

ohnonot wrote:

Fwiw, many modern laptops are physically smaller than older ones thanks to the smaller bezels around the screen, so a 14.1" today might be as small as a 13.3" from a couple of years ago. Your sleeve might fit.

ohnonot wrote:

Didn't even get the promised DHL tracking number, which could only mean it hadn't even left their office/warehouse yet. I'm a bit more miffed that I thought I'd be, tbh. Prior communication with the company was positive. They seemed genuinely interested in answering my (very nitpicky) questions. Also did my own research, and the frequency at which they've released updates via fwupd (especially for optimizing TDP with the embedded controller) seemed impressive; an update every month since release of laptop, I believe. If there ever was a valid reason to risk buying from a small vendor, this was it. Shame they f'ed up so close to the finish line.

ohnonot wrote:

Are Clevos bad?

Not really. They make decent stuff at good prices. Clevo and Tongfang bodies are very popular among local/regional distributors herethat cater to PC gamers, and are generally a very good deal compared to Razer or AlienWare prices. My issues are;
1. If you're selling a rebadged Clevo, you shouldn't be charging close to ThinkPad money.
2. Clevos (and Tongfangs) aren't LVFS friendly. I don't care if System76 is currently working on getting Coreboot support. If there's no way to update other parts like the embedded controller, your Coreboot support doesn't amount to much.

All in all, your budget is significantly larger than mine.

I don't want it to be, but like you I looked around the local used/refurbished sellers and found them extortionist. Figured I might as well buy new.

Skimmed through the recent episode list. Can't relate to much of the gaming rigs or graphics card reviews, but I do like that episode covering the new Compulab workstation. Proper kit, that.

cog wrote:

What's scary is there there's an entire generation of people now who've only ever done their computing on small smartphone screens. I worry for their eyesight and situational awareness at times.

I try to look at it from both sides of the "divide" whenever I can. Part of me will always get frustrated by the limitations of a smartphone or iPad, but at the same time there's another part that thinks laptops are downright clunky.

I wonder if things will come full circle, where we'll be back to having a "dumb terminal" in front of us remotely connected to a "real computer" somewhere like our predecessors in the early days, just with less beige.
